Agriculture Library Era

 
July 1964 - Departmental Collections are consolidated in the newly opened Agricultural Science Center and becomes the Agriculture Library  
September 1974 - Outreach and instruction services begin  
February 1981 - Computerized database searching begins  
July 1983 - Electronic reference services begin with the ANSERMAIL service  
books laid out to dry, December 1983 December 1983 - Agriculture Library is flooded; 1,800 books damaged
March 1984 - AgText monitor added to the reading room, provides immediate weather and crop pricing information  
library foyer dedication - November, 1985 November 1985 - Hume Library Foyer dedicated, funding provided by Mrs. Lucy Hume in memory of her husband Robert

July 1988 - Online catalog comes up and book circulation begins online

 
January 1989 - Morris Library and Information Center Opens  
February 1991 -- Dean of the College of Agriculture appoints a faculty committee to develop a library/information plan for the College  
August 1992 -- KAES Centennial Index published, provides access to 100 years of Kentucky agricultural research  
June 1992 -- Dean holds an open forum to solicit input from College of Agriculture personnel on library/information planning  
February 1993 -- Strategic Plan for Library/Information Planning submitted to the Dean of the College of Agriculture  
October 1993 -- Journal contents provided to the desktop through electronic contents service; paper Table of Contents service is discontinued  
March 1994 -- Agriculture Library Gopher server launched  
August 1994 -- Dean appoints a second faculty committee to assess the Strategic Plan and to develop a functional plan to be used as a guide in the process  
September 1994 -- Agriculture Library web site launched  
October 1994 -- Committee assessing Strategic Plan expresses concerns about the staffing level and service commitments of the facility as outlined in the plan  
December 1994 -- Committee and the Dean meet with Paul Willis to discuss the concerns raised earlier  
May 1995 -- Concept Paper drafted to implement the Strategic Plan and ratified by the Faculty Committee  
June 1995 -- Plan shared with Agricultural Department Chairs for input--plan endorsed by that group but concerns about staffing the Center raised. L. Jones, Chair of Agricultural Economics, wants to fund SSISA immediately  
July 1995 -- Dean announces the availability of the entire plan in both paper and electronic format to the Faculty, Staff and Students of the College of Agriculture  
November 1995 -- Feedback solicited from undergraduate students through Ag. Student Council  
February 1996 -- Gene Williams, Paul Willis, L. Jones, and the Dean meet to discuss the SSISA position  
March 1996 -- SSISA position description sent forward to Gene Williams as requested; Feedback solicited from the graduate students through the Graduate Student Association  
June 1996 and continuing -- Plan shared and feedback sought through the departmental seminar circuit  
July 1996 -- Plan is loaded on the Ag. Library home page  
October 1996 -- Dean responds to Chancellor Zinser's request for use of the space occupied by the library and reaffirms the planning for the facility  
February 1997 -- Status report on the project to the Chairs of the College of Agriculture, once again staffing issue raised  
May 1997 -- Design approved by the Ag. Faculty Committee; Plans sent out to all Department Chairs and Extension Directors for feedback; AIC Update presented to the Dean's Council  
July 1997 -- Display about the Center put up in Ag. North Lobby  
November 1997 -- Staff begin re-engineering themselves for the AIC environment  
March 1998 -- Aggressive PR Plan developed  
April 1998 -- College approves Plan B (creating the Center infrastructure); William T. Young Library opens  
June-July 1998 -- Books moved to Young Library; bulk of the shelves removed from Agriculture Library
   

Agricultural Information Center Era

 
July 1, 1998 -- Agricultural Information Center is born  
July 1998 -- Revised web site is launched in conjunction with AIC dedication  
asbestos removal at the AIC May 1999 - AIC is temporarily relocated to the Agricultural Engineering Building so that asbestos removal in N-24 Ag Science Center can take place

August 1999 - AIC reopens in N-24 Ag Science Center with minimal staff

 
January 2000 - Microcomputer Lab opens  
installation of new AIC infrastructure April 2000 - Office areas reconstructed and staff is reassembled
AIC Reading Room

September 2000 - Reading Room is finished

October 2000 -- Student Laptop Program begins   
August 2001 -- Major overhaul of AIC's web site is initiated, taking over 3 months to complete  
November 2001 -- Electronic Class Room is completed
