Disability Services Policy

The University Libraries support the academic mission of the University of Kentucky. For people with disabilities, the libraries will provide services and assistance that permit access to and use of library resources. UK Libraries cooperate with the campus Disabilities Resource Center for the benefit of patrons with disabilities. For Reader Services and training on adaptive technology please contact the Disabilities Resource Center.

Services

Research Assistance

When the Reference & Information Services Desk is open, Reference & Information Services has primary responsibility for assisting patrons in using the online catalog (InfoKat), CD-ROM databases, indexes, the Internet, and other materials located in the library for less in-depth questions. Ready reference assistance (quick lookups or quick answers) is available on an immediate basis. However, some research questions may require in-depth assistance that will be provided by appointment only. To schedule an appointment please call: 257-0500 extension 2170, or send e-mail to: refdesk@uky.edu.

Examples of Ready Reference:

  • Does UK own these two books?
  • I need to identify one scholarly article in the field of social work.

Examples of In-depth Reference:

  • I need to compile a legislative history of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • I am doing a paper about whether there are long-term psychological effects for women who have had abortions. I want to know what the current research says about this topic.

Retrieving Books

If time and staffing allow, a reference & information services librarian may be able to retrieve one or two items immediately. However, additional time will be necessary to retrieve an extensive list of titles. After the books have been retrieved the user will be notified and informed where to pick them up. Books from Young Library will need to be checked out at the Circulation Desk and books retrieved from other campus libraries will already be checked out to the user.

Retrieving/Photocopying Journal Articles and Book Chapters *

Once articles are identified:

  • One request form must be completed for each item needed.
  • Forms are available at the Reference & Information Services Desk; staff will assist in filling out the forms if needed.
  • The Document Delivery Service in the Interlibrary Loan Office will process these requests by pulling the journals or books, photocopying the articles or book chapters, and posting the invoice on the user's electronic library record.
  • If patron does not request that the photocopies be mailed to them, they will be notified and informed where to pick them up.

Invoices do not have to be paid when the photocopies are picked up; the invoice will be posted to the user's electronic library record.

The user may then pay the bill by cash or check at the Fines, Lost & Found Office (next to Circulation in Young Library) M-F, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Checks (NOT CASH) may also be mailed to: Fines, Lost & Found Office, Young Library, University Libraries, 1000 University Drive, Lexington, KY 40505-0456.
Checks should be made payable to the University of Kentucky.

* The "fair use" law of Title 17, U.S. Code, governs Photocopying. Document Delivery Services reserves the right to refuse requests it deems in violation of "fair use."

Adaptive Equipment

Adaptive equipment and software are located in Room 2-65 (2nd floor, Core 1), Young Library. The room is available for use throughout the week. Reference & Information Services is responsible for admitting users to the room during the times when the Reference & Information Services Desk is staffed. For admittance at other times please see the staff at the Circulation Desk (located on the first floor of Young Library).

Reference & Information Services will provide basic assistance with the technology. In-depth training on use of the equipment and software must be arranged through the Disabilities Resource Center. The Disability Services room at the William T. Young Library has two computers, both with Ethernet connections to the Internet. The computers are equipped with:

  • Internet Explorer
  • DragonDictate
  • JAWS for Windows
  • Kurzeweil 1000
  • Zoom Text
  • Magic
  • DecTalk
  • Hewlett Packard 5p Scanners
  • Aladdin Closed Circuit Viewers
  • Braille printer
  • Magnifying glasses

For first-time users of the room, it is highly recommended that, prior to using the room, an appointment be made with Carla Cantagallo (carla@uky.edu).
