AIC NewsFlash: Copy Card Confusion

We have had some confusion over how to get money on Venda Cards (card used to copy on the machine outside the Agricultural Information Center) since we are no longer able to take care of them. Below are some instructions that we hope will help relieve the frustration in getting your cards renewed. We can still handle your Plus Account (DART) cards (cards used to copy in Young) if you want us to. We have also compiled a list of what cards are used at each library. You can get to the list by going to http://www.ca.uky.edu/AIC/copycards.htm.

Venda Card Instructions for Departments as of JULY 2002:

1) Venda Card transactions are handled at the:

IKON Office
Young Library
Room 2-32
(Located in Core #3, walk past the Young tapestry to enter Core #3,
use stairs next to the copy room on the 1st floor)

NOTE: IKON office hours are restricted to 11 a.m. 1 p.m.
Monday Friday.

2) Pro Card is required.

3) Following information is required to send invoice copy to:

Name of Accountant in your Department:

Address:

E-Mail of Accountant:

Department Fax #:

4) Amount of copies/money you wish to add to the Venda card (under UK regulations there was a $50 or 500 copy limit).

5) If your department has a Pro Card usage form you will need to fill that information in as well.

Happy Copying.

We need your email address!

We will soon begin sending library notices by email. For example, if your books become overdue, you will be notified more quickly and we will save paper. Please click the link below (note: If the Agricultural Information Center is not the library you use PRIMARILY, please choose a different update form from the UK Libraries Email Update Menu page).

AIC NewsFlash: Copy Cards

If you do not use the copier outside the Agricultural Information Center,
you can ignore this announcement. Effective July 1, 2002, we can no
longer process your Vend Cards for the copier located outside the
Agricultural Information Center. Departments wishing to purchase
Vend Cards or increase the value on currently owned Vend Card may
do so by taking a departmental Pro-Card to the on-campus IKON
Customer Service Office in room 2-32 of the William T. Young
Library, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through
Friday. Procedures for Plus Cards for use in copiers in Young Library
remain the same and we will be happy handle those cards for you as
we have done in the past.

We apologize for the inconvenience. This was a decision that we
learned about after the policy had been implemented.

AIC Newsflash: ASM Journals

Thanks to the initiative of the Medical Center Library, we now have online access to all of the journals published by the American Society of Microbiology. The electronic files offer the current journal and go back to 1995. A list of the titles, linked directly to their entry in the E-Journals Database, can be found below.

Changes In the WebSpirs Interface

If you search Agricola, CAB Abstracts, AGRIS, BIOSIS, Current Contents, or Zoological Record, you will notice that the search screen has changed. A new version of the search interface for WebSpirs was loaded Monday. Everything is still there, it is just in a different place on the screen. The old search interface will still be available for a while (we don’t know how long) so we still have a link to it. If you want to use the old search interface, go to “Other Databases” on web page. There is a link to WebSpirs 4.0 in the introductory paragraph.

Searching From Off Campus

Most of the electronic products we offer can be accessed from your home computer. In order for you to access these products, you must have a library borrower’s card that is still active (meaning that you have used it in the last year) and you cannot be blocked from borrowing from the library. To use the electronic products, you must set your browser on your home computer to see the proxy server. We have a detailed list of instructions on how to do this at http://www.ca.uky.edu/AIC/proxy1.htm. If you are still having problems after following these instructions, give us a call at 7-2758 and we will try to help you get started.

These are just a few of the titles that are now available. Because of the size of the list, these titles are not yet listed in the E-Journals Database but you can get to them by going directly to the Wiley web site. If you can’t wait for the E-Journals Database listing, go to: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journalfinder.html. There you can get an alphabetic listing of all of the titles available to you.

AIC NewsFlash: Book Express

Well it is not quite having the book delivered to you door step but it is the next best thing. You can now request that a book be pulled from Young Library Stacks and be held for you to pick up at the Circulation Desk in Young Library. The service is called Book Express and all you need to do is fill out the web form to have your book pulled. You can get to the web form by going directly to http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/ddbe.html or searching under Book Express on the U.K. Libraries Home Page or the Virtual Circulation Desk on the AIC's web site.

SciFinder Scholar Access

Happy New Year! We begin the year with some great news-SciFinder Scholar is now available 24 hours a day and allows 10 users at a time. This was listed as a problem in some of our focus groups last year so we thought we would pass the word. Also, good news for those of you that need retrospective chemical data, 100% of the data
from all Chemical Abstracts issues now available! Effective December 16, 2001, searchable information from 3.8 million records from 1907-1967 has been added to SciFinder Scholar. The addition of these records to the CA and CAplus files brings the number of documents from 1907 to the present to more than 20 million records. You can
access this integrated information seamlessly as you explore by Author, Company, Research Topic, and Document Identifier.

Information on how to access SciFinder Scholar can be found at http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/Scifinder/.

AIC Newsflash: Current Awareness Profiles to Expire!

If you are getting tables of contents or subject searches on a routine
basis from SilverPlatter, please read this message. It seems that
SilverPlatter has a 2 year limit on the time that a current awareness
search can be saved. For many of you, that 2 year limit is up and you
will need to extend the time on your search. It is easy to do if you want
to do it yourself. If you do not want to bother, send your e-mail
address to Amelie Charron, acharron@uky.edu, and we will go in
and extend the search for you. Typically, we can only do this if the search
has NOT expired. If it has expired, then the search may have to be set up
again (contact Amelie for details).

Each SDI is unique and has its own expiration date, so it will be
necessary to edit all the SDI's you wish to keep receiving.

If you want to check on this yourself, do the following:

    1. Log into any SilverPlatter Data base.
    2. Click on SDI Account from the Menu
    3. Enter the e-mail address used when the account was activated (for
example, you will need to include pop in your e-mail address if you did
      it prior to this summer).
    4. Select the search you want to edit
    5. Click on edit SDI
    6. A box will come up with information about the SDI, just bump up the
      year on your expiration date
    7. Correct your e-mail address if necessary
    8. Confirm the changes and close
    9. You will need to do this for every SDI that you want to keep.
    10. The new version of the SilverPlatter software will have a warning that
your SDI is due to expire but that feature is not available on this
version. Hopefully, you will have some warning in the future.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Amelie
Charron at acharron@ca.uky.edu

Electronic Construction

This web site will be undergoing a bit of a facelift over the next few months. All the pages will be getting a new, updated look, and there will be some improvements made to the site overall which will involve the adding and shuffling around of pages, links, etc. The goals of these changes is to give you better access than ever before.

During this time we ask for your patience, and if for some reason you have trouble finding something on our web site that you have used in the past, please don't hesitate to bring it to our attention.

AIC Newsflash: What Happened to the Russian Journal Money

Thank you to all of you who responded on the Russian Translations that we cancelled. We realized about $6000 in savings so I went through all of the requests for new journals or electronic access that I had and tried to do as many as I could. There were several requests that were just too expensive and I would have spent any savings on just two journal titles. I have not given up on getting them, I am just putting those titles on hold while I look for additional money.

The journals on hold are:

  • Molecular Ecology - $2601.50

  • Electrophoersis - $2500.00

Subscriptions placed to begin with 2002:

  • RNA (Print and Electronic) - $575.00

  • Agricultural Resource Economic Review - $15.00

  • Proteomics (Print and Electronic) $733.00

  • Evolutionary Ecology Research (Print and Electronic) $400.00

  • Electronic Access to all journals published by Wiley $800.00

Still being researched:

  • Electronic Access to journals published by the Canadian Research Council (depends on license price seems to vary between $480 and $1880 a year)

  • Electronic access to:
    • Environmental Biology of Fishes
    • Plant Molecular Biology

I am also holding back money to pay for any electronic access increase that we will most likely have this year.

The AIC is trying to find the financial resources for materials that people want and will use. If you need a journal and UK Libraries does not have it, let me know and I will try to find an alternative to getting what you need. We have many more options for getting journal information than we did in the past.

Thank you for continued support in our efforts.

New Book List

Beginning today, you will be able to browse the new materials coming into the Agricultural Information Center and Young Library in the subject areas associated with all the fields of Agriculture and the Biological Sciences. The list is organized in broad subject areas but you can browse the list by your specific subject by choosing your subject from the menu at the top of the list. Not all subjects will be available each month and the lists will vary in length depending on what was processed for the subject areas. The current list includes everything received from July 1, 2001 to August 30, 2001. You can go directly to the New Books List by clicking on http://www.ca.uky.edu/AIC/New_Titles.htm.

I will notify you in an e-mail message when the list changes. Our goal is to have something up each month with an archive of past lists for one year. A link to the current list is available under the Hot News section on our web site. Past lists will be found under our Virtual Circulation Desk on our home page.

We have also provided a link to the New Library Materials List for the UK Medical Center Library. By using both of these lists, you will have a good handle on what materials are coming into University Libraries in the life sciences areas. You can find the link listed after the subjects at the top of our list.

While we are rapidly moving into an electronic age, there are still a number of valuable print items that are being acquired. By providing this service, we hope to make you aware of what is being provided in print.

Interlibrary Loan Changes

For those of you who have the Interlibrary Loan form book marked – get rid of it! As of August 1st the Library System is providing an enhanced way to request materials for interlibrary loan. The new system requires that you register once and keep your user name and ID. From that point on your personal information is saved and when you go to submit an interlibrary loan, you need only provide the information for the material being requested. Also, there is now an option to provide the information in electronic format (if the lender provides it that way). About 70% of our Interlibrary Loans are now filled electronically and you can get your request sent to you that way if you wish. In addition, you can view your outstanding requests, modify or resubmit requests and renew items checked out—all from your desktop. The form is also connected to the FirstSearch Database service. When you chose Interlibrary Loan in this service you will be required to supply your user name and ID.

I suggest that you go ahead and fill out your profile and get your user name and ID. Use something you will remember (I used my e-mail user name and ID) so you will be ready to go when you need it. The URL to register is http://lib.uky.edu/wtyill. Check it out!

Portable Electronic Classrooms Are Here!

The Agricultural Information Center is offering Portable Electronic Classrooms in a roll-around case. The units contain a laptop computer, projection system, VCR, USB hub, wireless speaker system, remote pointer and portable zip drives. The units are available to faculty teaching in the college of agriculture on a semester basis. Reservation forms are available from the AIC service desk. A PDF-formated version of this form is also available from our Virtual Circ Desk web page.

Nature is Back!

Thanks to Stephanie Allen at the Medical Center Library, we not only have electronic access to Nature but all the Nature journals. The Medical Center Library funded the package and Stephanie negotiated the contract. You will no longer need an id and password, simply go to the e-journals database: http://www-digilib.uky.edu/pubjrnl/pubjrnl.html and type in the title of the Nature journal you want. I have listed the titles available below.

Please note: Nature imposes a 3-month embargo on some features. The electronic copy is not a direct replacement of the current paper copy. Some features may not be available in the electronic issue.

Nature titles now available:

  • Nature
  • Nature Biotechnology
  • Nature Cell Biology
  • Nature Genetics
  • Nature Immunology
  • Nature Medicine
  • Nature Neuroscience
  • Nature Structural Biology

Forest Experiment Station Publications Removed from Young Library

Due to a mold problem, the Forest Experiment Station Publications had to be removed from Young Library. The Federal Documents Team noticed that there was mold growing on some of the documents and the Preservation Department had no choice but to dispose of them to contain the mold growth.

As some of you may recall, we had a serious flood in the Agriculture Library in December of 1983. The area that received the brunt of the water was the Forest Experiment Station Collection as well as some general agricultural materials. We replaced as many publications as we could and spent the next five years drying, cleaning, and pressing the documents that could not be replaced because they were an important research collection. We thought that we had salvaged most of the collection but now, almost two decades later it seems our efforts were in vain.

Becky Ryder, our head of Preservation feels that the re-emergence of the mold may have happened during the move in 1998. It was very humid the week our collection moved and some of the materials sat on trucks waiting to be unloaded at Young Library. Her theory is that the mold spores began spreading at that point but did not become obvious until it was too late to do anything about them. They are keeping a close watch on the rest of the collection to try to contain the problem.

We realize that this is a serious impediment to research in Forestry. We are not sure that we can replace the collection but will do our very best. A detailed list will be put up on our website when we receive it from the Preservation Department in Young Library.

Electronic Nature No Longer Available

The journal Nature is no longer available with the ID and password we have used in the past. This ID and password was organized by the Medical Library on their subscription to Nature. The Nature Publishing Group is now charging for a site license to provide electronic access to Nature and all of its specialized journals. The problem is the product does not provide the entire content of the journal (it does provide the articles) and we are having a problem getting a price from the publisher. The last figure I heard was $14,000 per year which is much higher than any other journal or publisher.

Many of the major research libraries around the country are making the decision not to buy the electronic version of Nature to try to bring the price down. We have not made that decision here at the University of Kentucky and are still discussing it. The major obstacle is finding that kind of uncommitted money in our budget at this time of the year. The science teams are discussing the problem and hope to come up with a solution. In the meantime, Nature is available in print in the Agricultural Information Center, Chemistry/Physics Library, Medical Center Library and Young Library. I believe that the contents to Nature are still available free of charge. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Electronic Access to Some Biological Sciences Titles Available

Stephanie Allen of Medical Center Library has informed me that the following titles are now available electronically.

  • Most of these titles go back to 1996 but articles from these journals cannot be placed on web sites or electronic reserve without the publishers permission. If you have questions about these titles or problems using them, you may contact Stephanie Allen directly or by clicking on the "contact site administrator" link at the web site.

    What's In a Name

After 30 years of being Toni Powell, I have become Toni Greider but I will answer to just about anything. The last name is pronounced as if it is spelled Grider, the e is silent. I thought I would pass this along since I have had so many questions. I won't be changing my e-mail address but I will change the name attached to it.

    Science and Science Now

This message just came across from Jo Staggs-Neel on the Science and Engineering Team: both Science and Science Now have been made available to the university online.

You can get to both journals thru the Electronic Journals Database. Science's url is http://www.sciencemag.org/. Science Now's is http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/.

    E-Books Are Here

Many of you know about our e-journals but did you know the University of Kentucky Libraries also provides e-books? NetLibrary is a collection of approximately 4,000 electronic books from publishers such as Blackwell, Oxford University Press, Kluwer Academic, Marcel Dekker, the Smithsonian, the World Bank, and many university presses. You can actually search the books or go to a particular book to check out the table of contents. You can preview all of the books without registering but to “check out” a book you will need to create a user name and password. There is no charge to you for this service and the entire text of the books are on line. You can get to the NetLibrary by going to: http://www.netlibrary.com/library_home_page.asp or the University of Kentucky Libraries homepage under Quick Links. All of these books will be listed in the InfoKAT in the near future with hotlinks to the NetLibrary.

    Videos Available For Classroom Use

The Agricultural Information Center has a growing video collection available for classroom use. The videos are fully described in the InfoKAT and in a listing on our web site. The videos can be checked out for one week or put on reserve for your classes. Video playback units are available in the AIC. If you wish to request we purchase videos to use in your teaching, let us know. We will work with you to see that we support your course work.

Audio/Visual Services in the William T. Young Library has over 3,000 videos available for you to use. You can check them out or request that they be made available for your students to use on site. The Audio/Visual Services catalog and a description of their services can be found at http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/avcatindex.html Videos available in the William T. Young Library are also listed in InfoKAT.

What You Can Do Through InfoKAT

The InfoKAT is more than the catalog for University of Kentucky Libraries. You can find out what you have checked out, renew books, and see what has been processed for course reserves. All of this is just a mouse click away.

The “Patron Information” button at the top of the first screen of the InfoKAT allows you to check your library records. Through this button you can renew books, see if you have any fines, or if anything is being held for you at the libraries. You need to have your library ID card handy to use this function as it will require that you put in your library barcode. Once that is done you can see all of your patron information. PLEASE NOTE: When you renew your books, please be sure that the books have actually renewed. If there is a hold or recall on a book or you are blocked for any reason (fines, your card has expired etc.) the book will not renew and you will have a message saying “Item not renewed”. If this happens, you will have to take your books to one of the library service points to get the problem taken care of.

Information on course reserves can be found by clicking on “Course Reserves” on the main InfoKAT screen. You can search by course, instructor, or department by using the pull down boxes. If you do not find what you are looking for, the item has not been processed for reserve. This is an excellent way for you to see what materials have been processed for reserve before you make an assignment. It also allows students to see an entire course reserve list with out going to the library.

InfoKAT does not allow you to ask for a book to be held for you or to recall a book checked out but you can still initiate a request from you PC. If you wish to request a book, simply go to the AIC homepage: http://www.ca.uky.edu/AIC and click on Library Forms or the UK Libraries homepage: http://www.uky.edu/Libraries and scroll down to holds and recalls. This will give you a form to fill out and library staff will process the request. You can see if you have a hold or recall pending by going to “Patron Information”.

These are just more examples of what you can do from your desktop. It is not that we don’t want to see you, but you now have 24 hour access to this information from anywhere.

    E-Journals and Databases Now Combined

You will find some new features in some familiar databases. Agricola, CAB Abstracts, BIOSIS, and FROSTI now have some added desktop access functions. If the University of Kentucky Libraries subscribes to an e-journal that is indexed in these databases, you will see a “Link to” icon in the FTXT field (full text) of the citation that you pull up. If you click on that icon, you go directly to the article in the e-journal. At the bottom of each citation you will see a “check for holdings” icon. If you click on this icon, the software automatically searches the UK catalog and brings up the cataloging entry for the paper copy of the journal. This gives you the call number and all that you need to find the volume. Both these features are designed to minimize the time you spend in finding your information. PLEASE NOTE: Not all of our e-journals are linked through this service. This has to be done through the publisher so if your favorite e-journal is not linked, it means that the publisher has not come to terms with the database producer. Eventually, most of them will be linked.

FirstSearch No Longer Needs an ID and Password

As of the end of August, FirstSearch no longer requires an ID and password to gain access to the databases. All you need to do is go to the AIC Website, http://www.ca.uky.edu/AIC click on Other Databases in the Quick Links box and you will find FirstSearch listed. You can just click and gain access to the various files. If you are accessing FirstSearch from off campus, you will have to have proxy access to get into it. To have proxy access you must be a registered library borrower (you have an ID card or blue card with a barcode on it) and your browser is configured for the proxy server. You can get to instructions on configuring your browser and registering in the proxy by going to http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/proxyhelp.html.

If you have any questions about FirstSearch or proxy access, please do not hesitate to contact me at agreider@uky.edu.

    Easy Access to Electronic Journals

The University of Kentucky Libraries has a growing number of its journals available electronically to your desktop. Some of these journals are available full text through such services as Lexis/Nexis and InfoTRAC Web while others are available directly through the publisher. Access to these journals is through the Electronic Journals Database that has been created to provide information on the electronic journals subscribed to by the University of Kentucky. The database provides a link to get to the journal if we have a direct link. The database grows daily so if you don’t find something there this week, it could be there next week! You can get to the E-Journals Database by going directly to: http://fmpro.uky.edu/pubjrnl/FMPro?-db=ejrnls.fp5&-lay=all%20fields&-format=search.htm&-view or through the AIC Website or UK Libraries Website. For the AIC Website: http://www.ca.uky.edu/AIC click on E-Journals in the Quicklinks box and then on Electronic Journals Database. If you normally use the UK Libraries Homepage: http://www.uky.edu/Libraries go to the “Quicklinks to Databases” pull down menu and choose “Elec. Journals db” and then click on “Get Database”.

Many of the journals in the E-Journals Database can be accessed from home if you are registered in the proxy server. Instructions on the proxy server are available at: http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/proxyhelp.html You must be a registered library user with a current library card and no blocks on your record to register for proxy access.

We continually work on adding e-journals, so if there is something you would like to see, please let me know and I will add it to the list. If you have any questions on the e-journals database or proxy access, please do not hesitate to contact me.

NOTIS is out and InfoKAT is in!!

There have been a number of changes in our electronic products over the summer. One major change has been in the library catalog. In June of this year we began installing new software for our automated system. The end result is that NOTIS is no longer the libraries’ catalog. Our new catalog is an improved version of the InfoKAT, our web based catalog. This catalog contains all of the current information that was once contained in NOTIS. You can get to InfoKAT through the libraries’ website or go directly to: InfoKAT.

NOTIS will be with us until the end of the calendar year but it is no longer an active catalog as we have not added any records to the NOTIS system since June. The InfoKAT is up to date and we recommend that you use InfoKAT for all of your library needs.

Access to Restricted Resources from Off Campus

During the Fall Semester the Library System has brought up a proxy server which will allow you to access most of the restricted databases and e-journals from home. The server actually validates that you are UK faculty, staff or student and will let you pass through to access library resources just as if you were on campus. To be registered to use the proxy server you must be a registered library user and have no outstanding fines with the library. If you are a registered library user, simply go to http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/proxyhelp.html and you will find instructions on how to configure your browser to take advantage of this service.

If you are not a registered library user, you will need to go to any campus library and asked to be registered as a library patron. You will need to tell them that you want proxy server access so they are sure to activate that as well. We can also register you by phone but if we do not personally know you, you will have to come in and show us your UK ID. (Sorry, that is a legal requirement.) For our off campus faculty, staff and students, we will take phone information or you can e-mail us from a UK e-mail account. We will need to know your full name, UK address, phone, and SS# as well as your home address. Once we have this information, we will verify that you are officially connected with UK and register you. We will then send you your barcode number so you can set up proxy access.

Once you are set up, you should be able to get into everything that is marked Proxy access on the UK Libraries Homepage under 'frequently used databases'. If you have any questions you can call the Ag. Information Center at 606-257-2758.

Two New Electronic Services Added to the Lineup

Two new internet services have been added to our expanding list of products.

MethodsFinder: This product is produced by BIOSIS, the same people who do Biological Abstracts, Biological Abstracts RRM and Zoological Record. The database provides electronic access to protocols used in the life sciences. It also includes detailed information on equipment, reagents, and other lab tools. The database includes both references and full-text protocols. You can get to MethodsFinder by going to the AIC Homepage and choosing other databases or going directly to:

    http://www.methodsfinder.org

    Click on "log into service"

Web of Science: The Web of Science provides electronic access to Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index back to 1989. This product provides the same access that the printed indexes do as well as many enhanced features (such as the number of times an article was cited). The funding for this new service was provided through money from the the Young Library Endowment. You can get to Web of Science by going to the AIC Homepage and choosing other databases or going directly to:

    http://wos.isiglobalnet.com

One word of caution, we have access for 10 simultaneous users so the system may be busy at times. Just try again in a few minutes.
