Database Guide

A listing of agriculture and biological science-related databases. Help sheets for many databases are located on the University of Kentucky Libraries' Database Help Sheets Page. Direct links to help sheets for some databases are indicated by the help sheet available symbol and interactive tutorials are indicated by the symbol.

Off-campus access is available for UK students and personnel. Instructions can be found on the Off-Campus Access page.

Note that many of the databases listed have restricted access.

Agricola

Indexes major journals in Agriculture.

 

Agripedia

Agripedia presents facts, figures, demonstrations, examples, graphics, and more regarding the concepts, practices, and vocabulary of agriculture in a multimedia format using audio clips, graphics, text and animation. Developed by the University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture created with a USDA Higher Education Program Grant.

   
AgNIC AgNIC is a guide to quality agricultural information on the Internet as selected by the National Agricultural Library, Land-Grant Universities, and other institutions.

AGRIS

Database from the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. Includes international agricultural research information. Extremely useful source of data on African and Asian countries.

Bioethicsline Plus

Comprehensive database on ethics.

   

Biological Abstracts

Biological Abstracts directs users to information on life science topics from botany to microbiology to pharmacology, serving to connect researchers with critical journal coverage. Coverage is from 1980 to the Present.

   
Biological Abstracts/Reports, Reviews, Meetings (RRM) Indexes the non journal literature in the life sciences and includes meetings and conferences, literature reviews, US patents, books, software, and other media. Coverage is from 1989 to the Present.
   
Books In Print In-print, out-of-print, and forthcoming books, audios and videos.
   

CAB Abstracts

Indexes over 7,000 international agricultural journals covering all aspects of both U.S. and foreign agricultural research. Includes comprehensive abstracts for most citations.

   

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts

Includes a section of 27 databases in the Biological Sciences ranging from fisheries to biotechnology.

Center for Research Libraries (CRL)

CRL is an international not-for-profit consortium of colleges, universities and libraries that makes available scholarly research resources to users everywhere. CRL is governed by the major research libraries of North America and is funded by fees, grants and contributions. Open to scholars and researchers, its collections include more than five million volumes of research materials rarely held in North American libraries. Scholars can search the catalog or one of their specialized databases.

   
College Source Online Provides access to 22,850 college catalogs (.pdf), with links to college web sites. Available through UK campus machines only.
   

Community of Science

Includes GeoRef, U.S. Patent Citations, Federal Register, as well as funded research. Note that some features of CoS are accessable only with a username and password provided to UK personnel only.

CRIS (USDA Current Research)

U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) documentation and reporting system for ongoing and recently completed research projects in agriculture, food and nutrition, and forestry.

Latest Weekly Update and 1999-present from WebSPIRS

Electronic version of Current Contents, providing access to tables of contents and bibliographic data from over 7,000 of the world's leading scientific and scholarly journals and approximately 2,000 books. In seven editions: Agriculture, Biology and Environmental Sciences; Arts and Humanities; Clinical Medicine; Engineering, Computing and Technology; Life Sciences; Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences; & Social and Behavioral Sciences.

   
Current Protocols Series of Manuals containing the standards for scientific, lab-tested research and experimentation methods. Covers cell biology, cytometry, food analytical chemistry, human genetics, immunology, magnetic resonance imaging, molecular biology, neuroscience, nucleic acid chemistry, pharmacology, protein science, toxicology, and bioinformatics.
   
Digital Dissertations Dissertations and theses from institutions in North America and Europe. Full-text access to all dissertations completed at the University of Kentucky from 1996 forward.
   
Dissertation Abstracts Listing of dissertations from participating schools going back to 1861 with abstracts since 1980. Thesis are included going back to 1988. (Dissertations unavailable via Interlibrary Loan may be purchased from UMI Dissertation Services.)

FOODLINE: Science Sight

Covers all aspects of food science and technology information. Sources include journals, books, patents, reports, and conference proceedings.

GPO Access US Government Printing Office official web site. Includes a variety of documents from the legislative, executive, and judical branches, plus additional US government-related content.

J-STOR

Database of Electronic journals that cover a range of topics including most science areas.

   
Journal Citation Report (ISI) JCR Web provides easy access to data that helps you evaluate and compare scholarly journals in the areas of science and social science. Coverage is both multidisciplinary and international, and incorporates over 8,400 journals from over 3,000 publishers in 60 nations. Includes such information as highest impact and most frequently used journals.
   

KYVL (Kentucky Virtual Library)

Provides databases, sources, and library catalogs for Kentucky public educational institutions at all levels.

   
Lexis-Nexis Academic Includes fulltext from LEXIS-NEXIS and CIS of nearly 5,000 publications (most fulltext, the rest abstracted).
   
Lexis-Nexis Congressional Bills itself as "the world's most comprehensive access to U.S. legislative information". Data from Congressional Information Service, Inc. The service offers access to a variety of information by and about the United States Congress.
   
Lexis-Nexis Statistical The service allows users to search summaries of statistical publications, then link to the full-text of selected publications on Statistical Universe and government Web sites. A collection growing by over 30,000 statistical tables annually.

Medline

Includes all areas of medicine back to 1966.

   
Pub Med Pub Med, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citiations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.
   
SciFinder Scholar This is a web-based program which gives complete access to the CA database from 1907-present. Searchable by Author, Company, Research Topic, and Document Identifier. Access to this database is restricted. It requires downloading software to your campus machine (access is restricted to UK campus machines). See the UK Libraries access instructions for details.

Tree-CD

Covers the forestry literature from 1939-1972. This coupled with CAB Abstracts provides a comprehensive guide to the forestry literature.

Tropag and Rural

Tropag: Covers the literature on tropical agriculture including the cultivation of food crops and industrial crops, animal husbandry, farming systems, and much more.
Rural: provides abstracts from the recent literature on the economic and social development of developing countries. Both contain full bibliographic citations and abstracts.

   
ToxLine TOXLINE (R) is part of the National Library of Medicine's extensive collection of online bibliographic information, which covers the pharmacological, biochemical, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and other chemicals.
   
ToxNet The Toxicology Data Network is actually a cluster of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas.

Web of Science (ISI)

Electronic access to Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Index from 1989 to date. help sheet available

WebSPIRS

Includes all databases associated with WebSPIRS: AGRICOLA, AGRIS, Biological Abstracts, CAB Abstracts, ISI Current Contents, MEDLINE, and many more.

Wildlife & Ecology Studies Worldwide

Incorporates Wildlife Review Abstracts, Swiss Wildlife Information Service, Wildlife Database, BIODOC, and Waterfowl and Wetlands Database into one electronic file.The database covers such topics as endangered species, behavior, ecosystems, physiology, and much more. Coverage is from 1935 to present.

   
WorldCat OCLC catalog of books, web resources, and other material worldwide.
   

Zoological Record

The world's oldest continuing database of animal biology (dates back to 1864). Includes information from every field in animal biology and projects in academic, government, and commercial organizations.
