Journals

A wide variety of Agriculture and Biological Sciences journals are available at the University of Kentucky in electronic and print formats. While not every journal is available in every format, access to information resources is extensive.

E-Journals Database

The UK Libraries Electronic Journals Database

In conjunction with the rest of the University of Kentucky Libraries, we are in the process of building a title-by-title database of the fulltext electronic journals, magazines, newspapers and other periodicals available online.

This database of fulltext journals is an interdisciplinary list that contains all electronic journals subscribed to by UK Libraries. The database will continue to grow to cover all of the titles in the aggregators (providers of access to groups of journals) to which we subscribe. The primary purpose of the database is to give you access to specific, known titles you are seeking, although keyword searching of the journal titles is also available. Searches of the tables of contents are often available at the aggregator site, and bibliographic searching is available at some aggregator sites as well as through a number of bibliographic databases. Many aggregators and publishers also provide free access to tables of contents and/or subject alerting services.

If you are seeking a federal government serial, you may find some in this database: if they are part of an aggregator's holdings, we have included them. But we do have access to a large number of government periodicals via the Internet that are NOT reflected in this database. Search those titles on InfoKat. Indexing for these periodicals can be found in the Lexis-Nexis Government Periodicals Universe.

• Searching
  You may search for titles of fulltext journals in the database using keywords or by entering a specific journal name. Use == (two equal signs) before the full title of the journal to request an exact match or to search for titles beginning with a specific word or phrase. If the title you are searching contains punctuation, try searching the title WITH the punctuation included. If that fails to retrieve your title, search just the words that don't include the punctuation (e.g., apostrophes) or pick ONE of the words connected by a hyphen.

Although searching parts of words will retrieve all titles containing that portion (e.g., searching radiol will retrieve "Journal of Neuroradiology), searching periodical title abbreviations might not retrieve titles that are actually in the database. The initial results of a search list the journal title, the aggregator through which you might access the journal, and the dates of coverage (these may change over time). The full record for each journal provides an explanatory note about idiosyncracies of accessing the journal, a link to the journal or the journal service, indication of print availability of the title in the library system, publisher, dates of coverage, proxy access indication, and special software needs.

Major Electronic Journal Collections

Most of the resources listed below are electronic journal services subscribed to by the University of Kentucky Libraries that are related specifically to Agriculture and Biological Sciences. A more complete listing can be found on the UK Libraries electronic journals page. Some non-subscription links to resources in Agriculture and Biological Sciences are listed as well.

These resources offer access to a large number of titles that will continue to grow as the service acquires the rights to include them. Therefore, the services will be described in regard to their general coverage on this page.

AgZines: A Harvest of Free Agricultural Journals
As the name implies, free access to a large number of electronic journals dealing with agricultural issues. Maintained by North Carolina State University.

American Chemical Society Publications
Accessible off-campus for UK faculty, students and staff by following the off-campus access instructions.

ASAE Technical Library
This site includes both abstracts and full-text of all 2001 ASAE technical publications. Everyone can search and access the abstracts. Access to the full-text can be obtained from campus or by following the off-campus access instructions.

BioOne
Provides fulltext access to bioscience research journals, most published by small societies and non-commercial publishers.

Cambridge University Press Journals Online
Access to the full-text can be obtained from campus or by following the off-campus access instructions.

HighWire Press
Access to searchable collection of fulltext journals. Access to the full-text can be obtained from campus or by following the off-campus access instructions.

J Stor
A n electronic fulltext of journals in ecology, economics, education, finance, history, mathematics, philosophy, political science, & population studies. Searchable. Access to the full-text can be obtained from campus or by following the off-campus access instructions.

Nature.com
Provides full-text access to a variety of science-related journals produced by the Nature Publishing Group. Articles are searchable in both Quick Search and expanded search modes.

Oxford University Press Journals
Access to the full-text can be obtained from campus or by following the off-campus access instructions. Not all Oxford University Press titles are available through this site. Other OUP titles are available through High Wire Press.

ScienceDirect (choose group-wide login)
A collection of 1000+ medical, scientific, and technical journals published by Elsevier Science Gateway. Click the "Journals" button to see a list of journal categories or to browse individual journals. Access to the full-text can be obtained from campus or by following the off-campus access instructions.

Springer LINK
Provides online access to 425+ journals created by the science publisher Springer. Full-text of articles are available in both HTML and PDF formats. Coverage ranges from the life sciences to chemical sciences, geosciences, mathematics, medicine, engineering, to environmental sciences, and economics. Access to the full-text can be obtained from campus or by following the off-campus access instructions.

Wiley InterScience
Full-text electronic access is provided just for the journals that the Library System currently subscribes to in paper copy. All other Wiley InterScience journals are available as table of contents and article abstracts. Access to the full-text can be obtained from campus or by following the off-campus access instructions.
