Teen Track

Like the camps the purpose of the Teen Tracks is to improve the knowledge and understanding of biotechnology of young Kentuckians.  In 2005 a Biotechnology Track was held at the Teen Conference on the UK campus June.  The Track was for 2.5 hours two mornings and they did hands-on lab experiments in DNA science to solve a crime mystery similar to the activities at the camps.  The Teens participating learned about DNA and genetics and how to interpret scientific/forensic evidence.  Kathy Junker put in the proposal for the Teen Track and led the group over from housing to the lab where the fun & learning exercises were held.  Joe Chappell and Scott Kinison led the hands on DNA science activities.

We had 12 Teens, from districts 1, 4, 5 and 6 participate in the Biotech Track.  Ten of the Teen participants were female and two male ranging from ages 13 - 17.  Two agents and two leaders also participated in the Biotech Teen Track.

Kathy Junker has submitted a proposal for a similar Biotech Track to be held at the 2006 4-H Teen Conference.  The suggested title and description for a Teen-Track proposal:

CSI: BioTechnology in Action - Scott Kineson, Lauri Pulver, David Hildebrand and Joe Chappell

Participants will investigate a crime scene, analyze the evidence, evaluate DNA samples and identify the perpetrator. This track is part of a 4-H Venture Grant. Teens participating will have the opportunity to serve as counselors at a state-wide camp or at county camps.

We understand this will be June 13 and 14, 2006, 9:30 - 11:30 if chosen as a Track.
