We have changed our program area name from Rural and Economic Development to Community and Economic Development
to reflect the programs we conduct and have available in all communities in Kentucky. I am excited about the increasing
opportunities we have to contribute to our Kentucky communities, and these program directions fit very well with the program
goals we hear from President Todd’s office.
The Kentucky - Tennessee Sustainable Development Institute is scheduled for April 3-5 and October 23-25, 2002, at the
Leadership Center in Jabez. The Institute will provide in-depth in-service on topics presented at southern regional institutes
on sustainable development and community development.
New partnerships are providing Extension health programs with additional information and resources. Kentucky recently
hosted the Southern Regional Health Institute, and the National Conference of Cooperative Extension Service and Colleges
of Pharmacy. “Health Literacy”, or the ability to understand written instructions on medications and verbal instructions from
health care providers, is a topic receiving more attention these days.
Manufacturing engineering and product development research is available from Dr. Subodh Das, director of the UK Center
for Aluminum Technology and president of SECAT, located on the UK Cold Stream Research Campus. For more
