Muscle Power: Regulation of Muscle Mass in Growing, Athletic and Aging Horses.
This talk will be an overview of the factors that regulate muscle protein accretion in mammals, with special focus on the horse, although information from other species such as the neonatal piglet and the human athlete will also be included and the relevance to the horse will be outlined. Specific focus will be on the factors that regulate muscle protein accretion in the growing and the atheletic horse and the maintenance of muscle in the "old" horse. Additionally, possible management considerations including the dietary protein intake (or the addition of "muscle building" supplements to the diet) and the timing of feeding relative to exercise will be discussed.
