Build Your Own Granola
SDNA hosted a "Build Your Own Granola" table in Erikson Hall as part of the organization's March 2013   National Nutrition Month activities.  Students, faculty, and staff had a variety of nuts, seeds, and dried fruit to choose from to make a custom granola - a nutrient-dense snack option.

Faith Feeds

The UK Student Dietetic and Nutrition Association is working with Faith Feeds, a small organization that seeks to alleviate hunger in Kentucky through provision of fresh fruits and vegetables to people who are hungry. On Saturday February 16th, students from the SDNA helped members from Faith Feeds package seeds. The seed packages will be sold at Faith Feed's  Annual Heirloom Seed Sale where community members are invited to browse more than 90 varieties of heirloom and organic seeds. All the proceeds from the seed sale are used to ease hunger in the Bluegrass by providing fresh fruits and vegetables through gleaning, gardening, produce preservation and education. Seeds will also be donated to nonprofit church and community gardens.

The Hope Lodge is run by the American Cancer Society and is a free service for cancer patients traveling to Lexington for their treatments. The Hope Lodge offers free lodging for cancer patients being treated in the Lexington area which allows them to live with other people going through similar experiences and have the support of staff and volunteers. Student Dietetic and Nutrition Association members were able to spend an evening with some of the patients and prepare a dinner for them.

SDNA Students Represent UK at the Universities Fighting World Hunger Summit 2012, Honduras

UFWH March 2012

The Universities Fighting World Hunger (www.ufwh.org) Symposium was held in Olancho, Honduras in March, 2012.  Students from around the world were exposed to numerous demonstrations by American and international students about their college’s efforts to alleviate world hunger.  Some students presented events such as Hunger Walks from their campus to state capital, in an effort to promote awareness of local hunger.  Other students talked about establishing Campus Kitchens where fellow low-income students could have a meal supported and prepared by the community.  Not only were the successes of other universities enlightening, but also the conversations with local Honduran students who were working towards sustaining their agriculture and educating others within their country.  Upon completion of the three day conference UK SDNA felt encouraged and realized the potential UK has to diminish hunger, in our city and worldwide.
