Why did you choose UK? 1) You can get a quality education. 2) It's quite affordable to get such a good education, especially with scholarships and other financial aid. 3) It has a great library and lots of other resources available for those students who want to learn above and beyond what is taught in class.
When did you start the HUNU major? Junior year, fall semester, 2008.
Why did you choose HUNU? I took Dr. Stephenson's NFS 212 class and discovered how our lifestyle behaviors, such as diet and exercise, can affect the progression of multiple chronic diseases. When I entered college, I knew I wanted to do something in the health care field, and this class helped convince me to pursue the HUNU degree.
How do you think a HUNU degree will help you in your professional endeavors? I've already touched base on this information. If you are not pursuing a health care career or some other professional degree, the HUNU degree has limited applications. However, it's the perfect major for pursuing multiple careers in the health care field, including physician, PA, PT, pharmacist, dentist, etc. Biology is a popular choice as a pre-professional health care degree, but many of those classes are not directly applicable to a health care career. Half of the classes are about plants, and the classes about animals are often focused on animal types that have relatively little in common with humans (insects, for example). Just about every NFS class I took was, in some way, directly applicable to what I'll be doing as a PA.
What advice do you have for students new to the HUNU major? Be ready for a science-intense, rigorous major. Also, as mentioned before, don't become a HUNU major if you're not pursuing a professional or graduate degree. It's not designed to be a major that prepares you for a job in the "real world" after your bachelor's. Expect to get at least a master's after your HUNU degree. However, that HUNU degree will properly prepare you for your future degrees and endeavors.
