Cercis Canadensis ‘Appalachian Red’

2005 Theodore Klein Plant Award Winner

Cercis Canadensis ‘Appalachian Red’

Cercis Canadensis ‘Appalachian Red’ is a stunning new selection of our native redbud. Found by American Rhodendron Society Bronze Metal winner and plantsman Dr. Max Byrkit along a roadside in Maryland. This 20-25’ tall tree absolutely explodes with brilliant fuchsia pink flowers in Spring; a much brighter shade than the typical redbud. 'Appalachian Red’ does well in sun to dappled shade and will adapt to any average garden soil. Young specimens can be seen at Yew Dell Gardens. Best in USDA cold hardiness zones 5-8. The image to the right was provided by Dr. Paul Cappiello, Yew Dell Gardens, Crestwood, KY
