Rosa 'Ausbord' GERTRUDE JEKYLL - is a David Austin Rose that was named for the great garden designer Gertrude Jekyll (pronounced JEE-kəl), a rose fancier who wrote Roses for English Gardens that is available free online. Gertrude Jekyll Rose is described as a shrub rose of slightly taller height, 6-8 feet, than spread, 4-6 feet. My most recent encounter with it at Leichhardt Landscape Supply in Bowling Green shows that the 2009 wet growing season resulted in some leggy growth like what would be expected of a climber. The only reason I have posted this is because of all the complaints about lack of fragrance in roses can be forgotten with this plant's powerfully "rose" fragrance. All I can say is the luminescent pink bloom with the "rose" fragrance will make most people I know happy. The bloom images on finds online vary from the bud to fully open as a dense multi-petaled flower. The bloom below is probably about three-quarters open. Gertrude Jekyll is thorny.
