Tim Woods, UK Extension Specialist for Ag. Economics, will unveil results from the latest Nursery Crops Buyers Survey and basic marketing approaches for wholesale growers.

2008 Pest Management Update
12:30-1:30 Understanding Horned Oak Gall, Maple Tip Borer, and Calico Scale
Dr. Dan Potter, UK Professor of Entomology, will provide growers with the latest on these pests with an emphasis on lifecycle and controls that will and won’t work.
1:30-2:00 Two Years And Counting
Amy Fulcher, UK Extension Associate for Nursery Crops, will discuss what two years of trapping Granulate Ambrosia Beetle tell us and how these results can be used in managing Granulate Ambrosia Beetle. Traps and samples of Granulate Ambrosia Beetle will be given away.
2:00-2:20 Scale Scare!
UK Department of Entomology MS student Sarah Mack will introduce growers to Magnolia Scale and Oak Leucanium Scale, some worst case infestation examples straight from the UK landscape, and will present her ideas on how to identify resistance among a range of Oak and Magnolia species, as well as the role that ants play in scale proliferation.

2:30-3:30 Life After Ash
Dr. Fredric Miller, Professor of Horticulture, Joliet Junior College and a Research Associate at The Morton Arboretum, will discuss his comprehensive research project on major pests of several common nursery crops including: Oaks, Hornbeams, Elms, Maples and Lindens.
3:30-4:20 Controlling Cicadas in Nurseries: An Illinois Perspective
Dr. Fredric Miller will discuss cicada control in nurseries. He will cover research on cicada damage, 4 year damage assessments, control of cicadas, and host plant preferences as well as on-going control research from the Morton Arboretum. (In 2008, 17 Year Periodic Cicada Brood XIV will emerge statewide (except Purchase and possibly Pennyrile Areas).)
