GIF files

Because of their low resolution (72 dpi vs 600 dpi for the TIF files), GIFs should only be used on web pages. GIF files and web-optimized JPEGs are not the best choice for printed documents. They will look coarse and blurry when printed.

Graphic File Types

Graphic files are provided as both TIF and EPS whenever possible. GIF files are often provided, but as visual samples only, so you can be sure you're getting the TIF or EPS file you want.

TIF files

TIF files are probably your first choice when you need to insert a graphic into a Word or Publisher document. It's ok to scale TIFs down, but if you need to make the image a lot larger than it's provided in TIF format, consider using the EPS version instead.

Stretching a TIF

TIFs can be used in Powerpoint, but the backgrounds are solid white, not transparent. If you need a transparent background, try inserting an EPS instead, or use one of the Powerpoint templates available on the drop down menu under "Templates/slides"

EPS files (UKPR has instructed us to remove eps files as of August 2008.)

EPS files are resolution-independent: they can be scaled up or down without losing clarity.

EPS files can be inserted into Word or Publisher documents. If inserted into Powerpoint, the background becomes transparent, and the foreground can be given a different fill or line color.
