Internships
Get the Most Out of Your Internship
Adapted From Majoring in Success by Patrick Combs
1. Talk to people. Introduce yourself t
o others around the
office. Get to know the "higher ups".
2. Ask for things to do. Don't wait around until there is something to do.
Volunteer for it. Take charge and ask for more responsibility.
3. Learn all you can about the industry. Ask lots of questions about the
company, its competitors, and why they do something a certain way.
4. Look at documents. Memos, letters and other correspondence can tell you
a lot.
5. Get in the information loop. Again, ask lots of questions.
6. Keep your ears open. You can learn a great deal about how a company really
works.
7. Be informed outside the office. Read and learn everything you can about
the company and the industry.
8. Milk the fact that you are a student/intern. You will be amazed at what
people are willing to do for you because you are a student.
9. Ask to attend interoffice and client meetings. Say that you want to observe.
10. Don't burn bridges. You want to gain experience, but these people can
also serve as valuable contacts and references.
