Internships

JobsHow to Get an Internship--the Essential Steps

1. Plan ahead. Start looking for an internship three to six months in advance.

2. Brainstorm - Develop a list of industries/fields that you are interested in getting experience in and learning more about. Go for your dream companies. Call them and ask if they have an internship program.

3. Stop by N-8 Ag Science N to visit Dr. Johnson and do some research.

4. Attend an Internship Information session through the Career Center and Experiential Education.

5. Consult UK's Experential Education office, 408 Rose St. (Stuckert Building), and check out their many books and files on Internship options.

6. Visit with your major professors and advisor to learn more about where prior students have done internships or have gotten jobs.

7. Read journals related to your major. Explore hidden opportunities. Which companies are coming out with new products? Who is doing interesting research?

8. Take advantage of your family and friends' network.

9. Go surf the net. Check out the world wide web. Use these on-line internship databases: The InternCenter (LogIn: ukstudent; Password: wildcats).

10. Try to find out who the top person is in the company (President, CEO) or the head of the division where you want to work.

11. When you reach someone in a position to make a decision, tell them that you are a UK College of Agriculture student and are considering going into this particular field. In the course of your research you had come across their name and would like to meet with them to seek advice and learn more about the industry. Mention that you would like to be around their company and learn from the ground up. You need to get experience and want to see if you are making the right career choice.

12. Prepare a customized cover letter and resume. Meet with your Career Development Specialist, Room N7, Ag. Science Building North for assistance. Call 257-3356 to schedule an appointment.

13. Apply and interview for several internship opportunities. For interview tips, meet with your Career Development Specialist and take advantage of mock interviews.

14. Secure a faculty supervisor.

15. Define learning objectives.

16. Complete Learning Contract for approval by the Associate Dean for Academic Program, N6 Agricultural Science Bldg N.

17. Register for internship course - if the course is in the College of Agriculture, the Advising Resource Center staff will do this for you.

18. Begin and continue internship.

19. Contact faculty supervisor on prearranged schedule.

20. Work on faculty supervisor's assigned projects.

21. Complete and submit Experiential Education's evaluation form.

22. Complete assigned projects and submit to faculty supervisor.
