Advising in the College of Agriculture

advising studentAdvising is important to us! As a student enrolled in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, you are advised by a faculty member who works, teaches and performs research in your area of interest. Advising is more than scheduling classes. Your advisor can also help you focus on your career goals. Of course, your advisor will work with you to make certain you are meeting graduation requirements and are enrolling in the correct courses.

Below are links to information that will help you in the advising and class registration process.

Advising Instructions

Things You Should Know
Advising and pre-registration are conducted every semester. It is typically in October and November of the fall semester and March and April of the spring semester. Specific dates are listed in the Schedule Book. Students are required to meet with an academic advisor prior to registering for classes.

Advising Steps

  1. Obtain a schedule book. This booklet can be picked up outside N8 Ag. Science Bldg. North or 112 Erikson Hall during the third week in October or third week in March or you may check myUK around the beginning of October or March.
  2. Schedule an appointment with your advisor. Most students will be scheduling appointments on-line. Other advisors in the college may schedule appointments in a different manner. If you do not see your advisors name on-line, please contact your advisor to make an appointment. If you do not know who your advisor is, come by N8 Ag. Science Bldg. or call 257-3468. If your major is in the School of Human Environmental Sciences and you do not know who your advisor is, check in 112 Erikson Hall or call 257-2855.
  3. If you are in a declared major, study your course requirements and make a tentative class schedule to share with your advisor. You may use APEX to help you determine what classes you need to enroll in. This will make your advising appointment much more productive.
  4. Meet with your advisor. Make sure to take a tentative schedule to your meeting.
  5. After advising, complete a registration worksheet (your advisor should have this document) and have your advisor sign it. You will not be able to register without an advisor's signature!
  6. Go to the Advising Resource Center in N8 Ag. Science Bldg. North and ask the staff to lift your advisor hold. The staff will only lift the hold if the advisor has signed the registration worksheet. You will not be able to register unless the hold is lifted. School of Human Environmental Sciences students will have their hold lifted in 112 Erikson Hall.
  7. Check myUK or the schedule book to determine when you can register for classes. If you cannot find this information, check in the Academic Resource Center (N8 Ag. Science Bldg. North or 112 Erikson Hall). All students are assigned a 3-day priority registration window in which to register. If you miss this window, you will have to wait until everyone else has registered. If you miss the second window, you will have to late register at the beginning of the semester.
  8. You may register for classes using the myUK portal. Check your schedule book for instructions. You may register during your assigned priority window.

Questions and Answers

studentsIn the College of Agriculture, you are advised by a faculty member who works, teaches and performs research in your area of interest. If you have forgotten who or where your advisor is, check on myUK or stop by N8 Ag. Scienc Bldg. North or 112 Erikson Hall.

When is Advising?
Advising and pre-registration is conducted every semester. It is typically in October and November of the fall semester and March and April of the spring semester. For the specific date check the Academic Calendar.

What is Add/Drop?
Add is the designated time during the first week of the semester when you can enroll in additional courses. Drop is the designated time during the first three weeks of the semester when you can drop a course from your schedule and it will not appear on your transcript.

What Does Withdraw Mean?
You can withdraw from a course through the semester midterm (check the academic calendar for exact date). However, if you choose to withdraw, a "W" will appear on your transcript. The only way you can withdraw from a course after the midterm is with special permission by your academic dean. In the College of Agriculture, the Associate Dean for Academic Programs is Dr. Mike Mullen. He is located in Room N6 Ag. Science Bldg. North.

What is a Repeat Option?
Every student can take three "repeat options." If you are not pleased with the grade you have received in a course and would like to retake it, you can choose to take a "repeat option." This means the grade from the first course will be removed from your transcript and will not be used to calculate your cumulative GPA. You can only take advantage of this three times during your academic career and you must complete the repeat option form before you graduate. Students in the College of Agriculture can obtain a repeat option form in the Advising Resource Center, N8 Ag. Science Bldg. North or 112 Erikson Hall.
