Degree Requirements (UK Registrar web site)   Contacts  Animal and Food Sciences Department

Animal Sciences involves applying the basic principles of nutrition, reproduction, and genetics to the production and management of horses, dairy and beef cattle, sheep, swine, and poultry.

It also deals with the processing and use of products from these animals for the benefit of the human population.

Animal SciencesWithin the Animal Sciences major, you may pursue one of three options:

  • Animal Industry
  • Food Industry
  • Pre-Professional

Your College Courses

Most of the 30 courses offered by the Animal and Food Sciences Department are relatively small, typically less than 30 students. This provides an opportunity for individualized instruction in both general and specific subject matter areas:

General Subjects

  • genetics/animal breeding
  • reproductive physiology
  • animal nutrition/ration formulation
  • live animal and carcass evaluation

Specific Subjects

  • Equine Science
  • Beef Cattle Science
  • Dairy Cattle Science
  • Swine Science
  • Sheep Science
  • Poultry Production

Faculty
Animal Sciences faculty teach courses in the area of their expertise (nutrition, reproductive physiology, genetics, live animal and carcass evaluation). Faculty incorporate the results of their research into their coursework. In this way students are exposed to the most recent information in a specific subject.

Student Clubs/Activities
Animal Sciences students have the opportunity to be involved in several of the most active clubs in the College:

  • Block and Bridle Club
  • Dairy Club
  • Horse Racing Club
  • Equestrian Team
  • Dressage Team

Animal SciencesThese clubs hold monthly meetings, plan yearly activities (such as Little North American, community service, industry tours, and participation in regional and national professional meetings), and function to serve the interests of students regardless of their livestock background. Active club participation provides you with an opportunity to develop leadership skills as well as enjoy the fellowship of other students who share similar interests and goals. In addition, students may participate in one or more judging teams (Dairy, Horse, Livestock, Meats), which provide opportunites to enhance their communication skills and to travel while increasing their understanding of animals and animal products.

Scholarships
In addition to scholarships offered by the University of Kentucky and College of Agriculture, the Department of Animal and Food Sciences has several scholarships available annually. These are awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement and leadership skills. You can keep a scholarship for a full academic year only if you achieve an acceptable level of academic performance during the fall semester. You are encouraged to apply for one or more of these scholarships.

Part-Time Employment
If you want some hands-on experience as well as some extra income to help you through your college years, consider a part-time job. The Animal and Food Sciences Department hires students each semester to assist in the care and maintenance of research animals, equipment, and facilities.

Joanna Wood Coles

The best thing the College of Agriculture has going for it is undoubtedly its professors. While I was in school I found them willing to answer questions and spend time with me outside of the classroom. Now that I’ve graduated I look to them as both friends and resources.
