LEXINGTON,
Ky., (Oct. 24, 2007) – Nancy Cox, University of Kentucky College
of Agriculture associate dean for research and director of the
Agricultural Experiment Station, was selected to be a member of
the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education and
Economics Advisory Board. The board advises the secretary of
agriculture and land grant colleges and universities.
“This appointment is a high honor and a significant
opportunity,” College of Agriculture Dean Scott Smith said. “It
is indicative of Dr. Cox’s national stature as a research leader
and her excellent credentials as a scientist and educator. Her
position on this board will give Kentucky an effective voice for
agricultural research and education at the highest national
level.”
In addition to advising the secretary of agriculture, the board
is responsible for reviewing long and short term policies and
priorities relating to agricultural research, extension,
education and economics. The board also provides consultation to
the U.S. Congress.
Cox, who will represent the National Food Animal Science
Societies on the board, is one of 31 members with expertise in
specific areas of agriculture. Members are appointed to
three-year terms by the secretary of agriculture, who selects
board members based on nominations from companies and
organizations. Cox was nominated by the Federation of Animal
Science Societies.
“I appreciate the nomination of confidence to this select board
from the Federation of Animal Science Societies and the support
of our Kentucky congressional delegation,” Cox said.
Cox earned a doctorate in animal physiology from North Carolina
State University. Her areas of specialty include mammalian
endocrinology and reproductive biology. She represents the
college on several Kentucky agricultural commodity groups. Cox
recently finished terms as director of the American Society of
Animal Science and chair of the Science and Technology Committee
for the Experiment Station Committee on Policy with
the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant
Colleges. In 2005, Cox became a member of the Board of Policy
Directors for the Board on Agriculture Assembly of National
Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges.
