LEXINGTON, Ky., (Nov. 11, 2005) – John Maxwell has written more than 20 books
and annually reaches more than a million people through his books, seminars,
audio and video resources about leadership and team building.
The University of Kentucky Center for Leadership Development is bringing Maxwell
to Lexington Dec. 2 for a one-day event called “Unbridling the Leadership Spirit
in the Commonwealth” at Lexington Center.
”John Maxwell has more bookshelf space at Barnes and Noble than many other
authors,” said Grace Gorrell, assistant director for the UK Center for
Leadership Development in the College of Agriculture. “He is known
internationally for the work he’s done in leadership development. We are going
to focus on his book 17 Laws of Teamwork, and he will be here live.”
Gorrell said partnerships for the event have been instrumental. The center has
worked with Kentucky League of Cities, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County
Government and Toyota to make the event happen. She said the challenge for that
day is to bring in people from business, government and education and ask “what
do we need to do to come together as a team to build stronger communities in
Kentucky?”
Maxwell will speak to participates during the morning session. After lunch a
panel discussion will take place consisting of Maxwell and three Kentucky
government, business and education leaders. The other panelists are Stu
Silberman, superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools; Sylvia Lovely,
executive director of the Kentucky League of Cities; and Lyle Hanna of Palmer &
Cay and founder of Best Places to Work in Kentucky.
“They are going to share about activities that are already going on in Kentucky
and where we are seeing these three entities (business, government and
education) coming together to strengthen communities,” Gorrell added.
A special registration fee of $99 is available to UK faculty, staff, students
and their clients. Other sponsors for the event include the UK President’s
Office, Leadership Kentucky, Hyatt Regency Lexington, Women Leading Kentucky and
the UK Alumni Association.

Cities, and the Kentucky Association of Counties are offering continuing
education credit for their participants.
Gorrell said the Center for Leadership Development hopes to make these types of
events happen each year.
“We have hopes to have a big ‘revival’ like this once a year,” she said. “Then
we are going to go out into the state and do more research to find out what
types of leadership development programs people want for their companies and
offer those workshops throughout the Commonwealth in the future.”
