Eweprofit II School Set for Oct. 11
By
Aimee Nielson
LEXINGTON,
Ky., (Oct. 4, 2006) – The sheep industry in Kentucky is diverse
and the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture is
continually working to give producers a competitive edge with
informative, interactive schools and workshops. A three-part
effort geared toward ewes began in June this year. The second
installment, Eweprofit II, is slated for Oct. 11, with the third
set for April 2007.
UK Extension Ruminant Nutrition Specialist Don Ely said
completing all three schools will provide prospective, new and
veteran producers a complete annual management program for their
flock.
“Although the schools are designed for new and prospective
producers, they may also be beneficial to veteran producers who
want to sharpen their sheep management skills,” he said. “We
just want to give all producers an opportunity to learn more
about sheep production and management so that they see a
positive difference in their enterprise.”
Eweprofit II will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. at the
UK Animal Research Center’s sheep unit near Versailles in
Woodford County.
Ely said topics include ewe management during early and late
gestation (a winter lambing program); preparing ewes and rams
for the breeding season (April lambing program); ewe management
during lactation (October lambing program); fall and winter
pasture management; internal parasite control; and vaccination
schedules.
Participants don’t have to attend all three schools to
participate. Registration is free. Contact Ely at 859-257-2717
