LEXINGTON,
Ky., (Feb. 14, 2007) – The 2007 Kentucky Dairy Conference is set
for March 6 at the Cave City Convention Center. The University
of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service is sponsoring the
one-day event where dairy professionals from Kentucky, Georgia
and Pennsylvania will address issues important to dairy
producers.
John Bernard, University of Georgia Extension dairy specialist,
will discuss ways to control feed costs “over the long haul.”
Bernard is known for his practical research and Extension
programming in dairy nutrition. Specifically he has concentrated
on using various byproducts in dairy feeding programs and has
studied how nutrition and management programs can improve
profitability. Bernard also will give a presentation entitled
“Managing the Money Makers.”
Senior Extension Educator in Agricultural Engineering for the
Penn State Cooperative Research Service Dan McFarland will talk
to producers about “Bringing Your Freestall Up-to-Date.”
McFarland’s focus is how agricultural engineering relates to
topics and issues in dairy production. He has been especially
interested in farmstead layout, improving existing facilities
and features that enhance animal comfort and productivity.
McFarland also will speak about how to help cows deal with
summer heat.
Kentucky dairy farmer George Purcell of Jackson County will give
a Kentucky American Dairy Association update entitled “New
Directions, Partnerships and Progress.” This will be an update
about the way check-off dollars are spent to promote dairy
products.
Another Kentucky dairy producer, Denise Robey, will discuss her
calf management program in the afternoon session.
Registration will be $25 at the door. The program begins with
exhibits at 8:30 a.m., with the first session beginning at 9:30
