The objective of the Kentucky Hybrid Corn Performance Test is to provide unbiased performance estimates of hybrid seed corn sold in Kentucky. Every effort has been made to conduct the test in an unbiased manner according to accepted agronomic practices.
Complete 1999 data are presented for the tests at each location. Two- and three-year averages for yield are included in each of the single location tables. Readers are encouraged to consider these multiple-year averages and the averages over locations (Tables 4E, 4M, 4L, 5E, 5M, 5L, 6E, 6M, and 6L), since these are better estimates of a hybrid's yield ability than data gathered at one location in one year.
Comparisons between yields or other characteristics of any two or more hybrids should be made only with data from one table at a time. The testing procedures do not provide a suitable comparison between a hybrid grown at one location in one maturity group test with another grown at a different location and the same or a different maturity group test. Hybrids are grouped into early-, mid-, and late-maturity groups based on days-to-maturity classification provided by the parent company. Also, those hybrids that yield equally as high as the highest yielding hybrid based on statistical evaluation are indicated by an asterisk. The hybrids chosen for testing are those most likely to be available for sale in 2000. Seed of each commercial hybrid (Table 2) was obtained from the sponsoring company. Each company was given the opportunity to enter hybrids into the early (112 days to maturity or earlier), medium (113-117 days to maturity), and/or late (118 days to maturity or later) tests. The days-to-maturity classification was made by the parent companies.
The map on page 1 shows the test locations. The test sites were selected to represent different agroclimatic areas of the state where corn is a major commodity.
The Princeton, Franklin, and Glendale test locations were planted no-till in soybean residues. The Mayfield test was planted no-till following wheat residue. The Robards test was planted minimum-till following soybeans. The Lexington and Quicksand tests were planted in conventionally tilled seedbeds following corn. Fertilizer was applied as indicated by soil tests.
All test areas were treated with herbicide(s) and supplemented by post-emergence cultivation and/or herbicide when necessary. Force was applied in the row at planting to control corn rootworms. Table 3 shows the specific cultural treatment for each location.
Each hybrid was grown in three replications at each location to sample uncontrollable variability of soil types, fertility, and other factors. Annual mean yields presented in the tables are averages of three replications at the test site, while 2-year and 3-year means are averages of six and nine replications, respectively. A randomized complete block (RCB) design was used for each maturity group test at each location.
Small differences in yield are usually of little importance. The yield of two varieties at a single location may differ because of chance factors (difference in soil characteristics, fertility, or availability of moisture) even though the inherent yielding ability is the same. To decide if an observed yield difference is real, use the LSD (least significant difference) provided at the bottom of the tables. If the difference in yield is greater than the LSD value, you may be reasonably certain that the entries actually do differ in yield ability. Consider the following example:

The deviation between variety A and variety B is 10 bu/ac (135-125=10). The difference is smaller than the LSD (12 bu/ac). We can thus infer with reasonable confidence that variety A and variety B have the same yield in this test. However the difference between variety A and variety C is 25 bu/ac (135-110=25), which is larger than the LSD of (12 bu/ac). Therefore, we can infer that variety A yielded more than variety C in this test. "N.S." in the tables indicates that no statistically significant difference was determined. The LSD is calculated for an alpha level of 0.10. For your convenience, an asterisk has been placed alongside those yield means that are not significantly different from the highest yield mean in that column. This comparison means that those means followed by an asterisk do not differ by more than one LSD.
The coefficient of variation (C.V.) is a measurement of the variation that exists among hybrids in a test. The C.V. expresses the amount of variation as a percentage of the hybrid mean. A low C.V. indicates little unexplained variation and more precise results.
All plots were planted with a two-row, no-till planter modified for small plot work. The planter boxes were replaced by special planting cones that allowed planting of a specified number of kernels per plot. Each plot consisted of two rows 30 inches apart and 22 feet long. Each plot was planted with 40 seeds/row. When seedlings were 12-18 inches tall, the plots were thinned to 33 plants/row, which equals a plant population of 26,000 plants/ac.
All plots were harvested with a modified two-row corn combine. Both rows of each two-row plot were picked and shelled. The grain weight and moisture content of each plot was measured with an electronic scale and moisture meter mounted on the combine. Data from each test location were temporarily stored in a portable data logging device prior to transfer to a computer at Lexington. Yields were calculated for grain at 56 pounds per bushel and adjusted to 15.5% moisture. Test weight was also provided by the electronic weighing device. The test weight reported in each annual table for any hybrid is not corrected for harvest moisture and is reported at the moisture content for that hybrid listed in that table. Dropped ears were not gleaned from the plots.
The total number of lodged plants was recorded immediately prior to harvest. Also at harvest, selected plots were observed to indicate apparent European Corn Borer damage by counting the number of broken tops per plot. (personal communication, Dr. Rick Bessin, Department of Entomology, University of Kentucky). The most severe indications of European Corn Borer damage (>50% broken tops) were observed at the Lexington and Mayfield locations. The least damage was observed at Robards and Princeton (10-15% broken tops). In general, Bt hybrids had less apparent corn borer damage than non-Bt hybrids.
Chemical composition was measured from one replication of each early-, mid-, and late-maturity test at each location. These samples were analyzed by the Kentucky Grain Quality Laboratory at Lexington1 using Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS). The NIRS analysis provided evaluation of protein, starch, and oil and is presented in Table 7 for grain at 0% moisture.
Since grain used in feed rations contains some moisture, the composition variables provided in Tables 7 and 15 possibly should be used at a moisture content that is different than the 0% shown in Tables 7 and 15. To covert to a suitable moisture content—for example, 15% moisture—multiply the values in Table 7 or Table 15 by 0.85. For any other moisture content, multiply the values by (100 - % moisture)/100.
High oil hybrid blends (TC High Oil Blend®) were tested at three locations. The yield and composition information will be useful to farmers feeding high oil (high energy) grain to livestock and to those participating in the high oil, value-added grain market. The tests had 13 entries at three locations with three replications per location. The three-location average yield data are available in Table 15D. The two-year table (Table 15E) includes only the data from the Lexington and Robards locations. A 20 to 25 plant hand-pollinated sample from each replication of the Lexington test was analyzed for chemical composition. The grain was analyzed by the Kentucky Grain Quality Laboratory at Lexington1 using NIRS. The chemical composition values presented in Table 15F are given for grain at 0% moisture.
The Kentucky Hybrid Corn Performance Test was divided into three tests—early, medium, and late maturities—to provide evaluations of the three maturity group hybrids without competition biases. The three tests were grown at every location for a total of 21 tests.
The early maturity hybrid group in Table 4E and all subsequent "E" tables are those hybrids rated by the parent seed company to mature in 112 days or earlier.
The medium maturity hybrid group in Table 4M and all subsequent "M" tables includes those hybrids rated by the parent seed company to mature in 113-117 days.
The late maturity hybrid group in Table 4L and all subsequent "L" tables includes those hybrids rated by the parent seed company to mature in 118 days or later.
The open-pedigree hybrids, FR1064 X FR450, FR27 X Mo17, and B73 X Pa91, were included in each early, mid, and late test, respectively, to provide an internal evaluation of hybrid maturity. The seed of these hybrids was obtained from Illinois Foundation Seeds Inc. at Champaign, Ill.
The Mayfield test was planted on April 13 and thinned on May 26. Plant populations and early weed control were good even though the test had compaction problems. The previous crop was no-till wheat. A high oil test was also grown at this location.
The Princeton test was planted on May 3 in soybean residue and was thinned on June 10. Weed control was good. There were no disease problems.
The Franklin test was planted on April 20 and was thinned on June 2. Weed control was excellent during the entire season. Stands were excellent.
The Robards test was planted on May 4 in soybean residue and thinned on June 10. There were no weed or insect problems. A high oil test was also grown at this location.
The Glendale test was planted no-till in soybean crop residue on April 22 and was thinned on June 2. Weed control was good during the entire growing season. There were no disease problems. This test was damaged by drought during the growing season.
The Lexington test was planted on April 30. The test was thinned on June 1 and 2. Late-season grasses in alleyways were sprayed with Roundup. There were no disease problems, but there was some damage from European Corn Borer. A high oil test was also grown at this location. This test was damaged by drought during the growing season.
The Quicksand test was planted on May 10 and thinned on June 17. Early-season weed control and seedling emergence were excellent for most plots. The alleyways were sprayed with Roundup to control johnsongrass and other late emerging weeds and grasses.
All Western Kentucky locations were observed for potential problems during the months of June, July, and August. Eastern Kentucky locations were checked on several occasions during the growing season. Several locations suffered reduced yields due to the extreme drought conditions during the growing season.
The authors sincerely appreciate efforts of the Kentucky Corn Growers Association in helping us upgrade plot equipment. A MF 8-XP combine was leased to the corn project at minimal cost by the Kentucky Corn Promotion Council of the Kentucky Corn Growers Association. This combine contributed to improved accuracy of the data, which is reflected in lower C.V.'s. The combine uses a data collection system that provides test weight data along with yield and moisture.
