WORLD WAR TWO VETERANS…A program from the Bullitt County Cooperative Extension Service brought World War Two veterans together with fifth grade students to learn more about that war first hand. It was a rare educational opportunity for the students as they came armed with questions to ask the veterans.

 

ARBOR DAY…A reforestation project is underway at a surface coal mine site in Pike County. The Bent Mountain Mine site is ongoing surface mine reclamation, using the American Chestnut Tree, which is being returned from the brink of extinction.

 

GPS SCAVENGER HUNT...It has become an annual event for English as a second language students from Louisville’s Atherton High School. The students, from 14 different countries, had to communicate with one language in order to locate downtown Louisville landmarks using only global positioning system receivers.

 

KENTUCKY 4H FOUNDATION…There was reason to celebrate for the Kentucky 4H Foundation in downtown Lexington recently with a special evening of fun, food, and entertainment. The highlight of the event was the recognition of UK Basketball Coach Tubby Smith as the first recipient of the Kentucky Youth Developer of the Year Award.

 
 

PRIDE OF KENTUCKY SHOWCASE…Kentucky Farms Are Fun was the theme of a Pride of Kentucky Showcase in Bowling Green as hundreds of adults and children attended the event. It was an opportunity to promote farms and businesses in the Cave Region Agritourism area of south central Kentucky.

 
 

ENERGY GRANT…The UK Cooperative Extension Service is committed to educating people about energy efficient methods and products. A recent grant from the Kentucky Office of Energy Policy will help.

 
  GET MOVING KENTUCKY…UK Extension agents, administrators, and staff in the district six area of south central Kentucky are getting moving. They are setting examples in their communities by increasing physical activity and exercise as part of the Get Moving Kentucky campaign which was launched in 2003 by HEEL, Health Education through Extension Leadership. 
  JUNE IS DAIRY MONTH…We continue to focus on the dietary guidelines of the USDA’s new My Pyramid. June is National Dairy Month and we will be “concentrating on calcium” with a trip to UK’s dairy farm.
