The objectives of the Kentucky 4-H Horse Program are to provide opportunities for 4-H members to:

  • Develop leadership, initiative, self-reliance, sportsmanship and other desirable traits of character.
  • Experience the pride of owning a horse,  pony, or other equid, and being responsible for its management.
  • Develop an appreciation for equine activities as a healthy and wholesome form of recreation.
  • Enhance their horsemanship skills and knowledge as well as understanding the business of breeding, raising and training horses.
  • Increase their knowledge of basic safety precautions in order to prevent injury to themselves, their mounts, and others.
  • Promote a greater love for animals and a humane attitude toward them.
  • Be better prepared for citizenship responsibilities through working in groups and supporting horse projects and activities.

The 4-H horse program is one of the largest and fastest growing 4-H programs in Kentucky and the nation. Each year over 6,000 4-H youths in Kentucky and over 275,000 4-H youths throughout the nation have fun and learn through their association with horses.  The young people of today’s 4-H horse program are accepting the challenges that horses and horsemanship offer and all evidence indicates even more meaningful programs in the future.
