West Kentucky 4-H Camp is in Dawson Springs, KY. and covers approximately 450 acres. This land was slated to become a state park, but in 1951, the Commonwealth of Kentucky gave the camp to the University of Kentucky for use as a 4-H Camp on a 99 year lease. The camp serves 36 counties with a bed capacity of 386 campers and counselors per camping session. The camp’s facilities include a swimming pool with diving board, a large modern dining hall, Sparks Hall, a multipurpose meeting/classroom building, a shelter house for small gatherings, a pavillon, a nature hut, crafts room, country store for souvenirs and snacks, and heated cabins and bath houses, and a horse arena. The camp has a 14 acre lake for fishing, canoeing, hiking and wetlands studies. West Kentucky provides a state of the art challenge course program with seven high elements and twelve low elements for exciting and highly effective leadership and teambuilding training. It also has facilities for archery, riflery, basketball, softball, soccer and football. Evening programs can be conducted in its rustic campfire area or singing area.
UNIQUE TO WEST KENTUCKY
For the past several summers, campers at West Kentucky 4-H Camp had the option of a Basic horsemanship class each session. Campers who do not wish to participate in a full class, were offered a daily activity period. The results have been extremely positive and the classes will be repeated in 2009.
