The 4-H name and emblem have a level of federal protection higher than that of a trademark, copyright or patent.  At the request of Congress, the 4-H Name and Emblem are protected by the Secretary of Agriculture, a member of the Cabinet.  The notation “18 USC 707” is the statement in the United States Code which describes the protection.

Note to Kentucky 4-H:  Dr. Joe Kurth has determined that both external and internal use of the 4-H emblem is to include the notation “18 USC 707”.  Use of this notation is not optional.  When new files are created and old files/documents are updated, the official emblem with 18 USC 707 is to be used.

If in doubt, refer to the National 4-H Headquarters for the latest official information on the 4-H Name and Emblem.
