DESCRIPTION
The American Private Enterprise System Program is designed for
high school juniors and seniors. The program is implemented at
the local level and provides youth with a basic exposure to the
American Private Enterprise System through topics such as: How
America is organized to do business; individually owned
businesses, partnerships, corporations and cooperatives; other
political economies, and how they work; our economy, how it
works, what it provides; consumers; supply and demand, credit and
savings; unemployment and inflation; and investments.
LOCAL PROGRAM
In APES, a select group of students discuss our economic system and how it works at the local, national and international levels. Discussion leaders from local businesses and professions, in cooperation with schools and 4-H Cooperative Extension agents, provide program leadership at the local level. Selected topics include:
· How America is organized to do business
· Other political economics and how they work
· The US economy how it works and what it provides
· Government and business
· The individually owned business and business partnership
· Corporations
· Cooperatives-what they do and how they differ from other businesses
· International trade
The program also helps participants discover career opportunities in agriculture and business.

· To provide leadership training and motivation.
· To hear and question business leaders who discuss topics of current interest.

High school juniors and seniors.

DESCRIPTION
The Kentucky Youth Seminar is a statewide 2½ day program for selected high school juniors and seniors who were participants in the county American Private Enterprise System Program. It is both instructional and competitive. Participants have an opportunity to listen to and question speakers from business and government about our American Private Enterprise System. They are also given the opportunity to function as members of a board of directors of a cooperative or corporation to solve real-world problems presented to them. Examinations are administered to determine cash and scholarships. Fourteen Youth Scholars and two Junior Leaders are selected to attend the National Institute on Cooperative Education meetings in August.
OBJECTIVES
· To help participants better understand the American Free Enterprise System and how business decisions are made by solving problems as directors of corporations or cooperatives created for seminar purposes.
· To provide leadership training and motivation.
· To hear and question business and government leaders who discuss topics of current interest.
· To learn of a variety of career options available in the Business Sector.
AUDIENCE
The following rules apply to eligibility for the Kentucky Youth Seminar:
Youth Scholars:
If 10 to 14 complete program-2 eligible to attend Seminar If 15 to 19 complete program-3 eligible to attend Seminar If 20 to 24 complete program-4 eligible to attend Seminar If 25 to 34 complete program-5 eligible to attend Seminar If 35 to 44 complete program-6 eligible to attend Seminar
If more than 44 students complete the program, each group may send one additional Youth Scholar for every 10 students beyond the 44 that successfully complete the local program. Programs comprised of multiple counties will be considered separate programs for determining the number of scholars they may send to the Kentucky Youth Seminar. Each of the counties in a multi-county program may send at least two students to the Seminar.
Junior Leaders:
At least one JUNIOR LEADER per local program is eligible to be a Junior Leader at the Youth Seminar. However, if 25-44 Youth Scholars complete the local program, two Junior Leaders are eligible to participate in the Youth Seminar and if 45 or more successfully complete, three Junior Leaders are eligible to attend. In addition, Junior Leaders attend the Youth Seminar must have been Junior Leaders at the local level in the program year just completed. Finally, a student may attend the Kentucky Youth Seminar one time as a Youth Scholar and one time as a Junior Leader.

COSTS
Cost - $100.00. It is encouraged that local scholarships be solicited to cover all but $5 of this cost. The remainder should be contributed by the participant. This money covers food, lodging, tours, social activities, and registration. Participants- transportation and personal spending money must be provided.

DESCRIPTION
American Institute of Cooperation sponsors national youth programs at its annual meeting to provide young people an opportunity to learn more about cooperatives and our private enterprise system. Kentucky participants are selected during the Kentucky Youth Seminar in June and receive scholarships to attend the institute's annual meeting held at various sites throughout the United States.
OBJECTIVES
· To help participants better understand American business by attending programs and workshops designed to increase awareness and understanding of business principles and practices.
· To provide leadership training and motivation.
· To hear and question business leaders who discuss topics of current interest.
AUDIENCE
Sixteen delegates are selected from participants in the Kentucky Youth Seminar. Participants are selected from an Application Form and scores on tests taken at the Kentucky Youth Seminar. These delegates will join delegates from 40 other states for this conference.

COSTS
Scholarships are provided by the Kentucky Council of Cooperatives to cover costs of transportation, lodging, registration and food. Participant's personal spending money is not provided.
