OVERVIEW OF THE DOG PROGRAM
The two major state events which make up the dog program are State
4-H Dog Camp and the State 4-H Dog Show. State 4-H Dog Camp usually
takes place during the spring at the J.M. Feltner 4-H Camp. The State
4-H Dog Show takes place at the State Fair in August.
The objectives of the dog program are as follows:
- Learn about major dog breeds
and be able to identify their characteristics
- Study the responsibilities
of dog ownership
- Demonstrate dog care and management,
feeding, care, handling, and grooming
- Keep record of all costs and
management practices
- Learn and follow dog health
regulations, including first aid and simple treatments for ailments
not requiring veterinary attention
- Train dogs to follow simple
commands
- Understand the role of scientific
research in dog husbandry
- Develop sportsmanship, cooperation,
decision-making ability, and public speaking skills through participation
in demonstrations, tours, judging, and/or exhibits
- Practice leadership skills
and roles, take part in community affairs, and demonstrate citizenship
responsibilities
- Explore career, job and productive
leisure opportunities
RESPONSIBILITIES OF AGENT
- Promote participation
in state events among youth enrolled in the 4-H dog project.
- If
interest in the dog project is sufficient, recruit volunteers
to lead a dog club or project group.
- Recruit a sufficient number of leaders to attend local 4-H, county
and state dog events with youth.
- Write bullets showing
impact of program on youth and animals; include changes in attitude
and behavior, goals set, etc. Be sure to use the term "dog" in
the statement.
