"Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless or race, color, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin."
PURPOSE
The purpose of the State Forestry Field Days for juniors and the Invitational for senior 4-Hers is to provide the opportunity for 4-H Forestry Project members from all counties to:
1. Develop leadership skills and work toward achieving character development and effective
citizenship.
2. Develop an appreciation of trees and their roles in our environment, whether in a yard, park, or
forest.
3. Develop appreciation of the need and importance of conserving woodland as a source of
products and services necessary for quality living.
4. Acquire information and understanding of practical forestry skills in forest management and
utilization of forest products.
Although these include competition, they are offered as an extensive forestry educational experience and provide an opportunity for exploration of the broad aspects of forestry. The setting, contests, leadership and supplementary events are all directed to this end.

DESCRIPTION
The Invitational includes contests in tree identification, measurements, compass traverse, forest
evaluation, insect and disease and forestry bowl. The event will be based on criteria and scoring
system used in the national event, with the exception of the forestry bowl. It must use an approach that is a
combination of an individual and team basis.
WHO MAY PARTICIPATE
The senior Invitational is open only to 4-Hers 14-19 years of age who are still in high school (cannot be enrolled in or attending any college) by the time of National the next August. There is a limit of four teams per county. Counties must, however, pre-register individuals and
teams. Individual senior 4-Hers may take part, but only county teams of four compete for the right to advance to National. The highest scoring four-member county team will represent Kentucky at National. Any county team member not planning to advance to National will not be permitted to participate in the Invitational. Counties must carefully check this with their participants.
STATE INVITATIONAL INFORMATION
Registration--8:30 a.m.; conclude around 3:00 p.m.; Registration fee of $2.50/participant to help pay for ribbons; Must bring sack lunch & drink(s) or arrange lunch with Leadership Center;
AWARDS/NATIONAL 4-H INVITATIONAL
All taking part receive green participation ribbons; 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th place overall rosettes to highest scoring individuals; highest scoring team earns right to advance to represent state at national event in early August at Jackson's Mill 4-H Camp, West Virginia and receives team rosettes.
STATE TEAM FOR NATIONAL CONTEST
The highest scoring county team of four will be the team that will represent Kentucky in the national event. The team is selected almost one year in advance of national to provide time for training and practice to better prepare them for national competition. Kentucky Forestry Industries Association and Westvaco sponsor most of the expenses of the team. The agent of the winning team serves as its advisor. In the event that out-of-state travel for professional staff is "frozen", the team may not get to advance. All counties with teams must make them aware of this possibility.
AGENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Promote program, involve leaders, provide training, and involve senior 4-Hers as individuals and/or
teams in state invitational; one agent serves as superintendent and one as assistant for the state event;
agent with winning county team will serve as advisor, arranging training, practice, travel, registration
and accompanying team to national.
THANKS TO RESOURCE LEADERS AND SPONSORS
We are grateful to personnel from national, state, and private industry who serve as resource leaders
for the Invitational. We thank the Kentucky Forestry Industries Association and Westvaco for
providing sponsorship for the state team's expenses to national.
CHANGES BEING DISCUSSED FOR FUTURE FOR SENIOR INVITATIONAL
The Senior Invitational remains under review as to its future. It has many positives to consider, but also
several concerns. It involves a relatively few youth from few counties and involves a significant
amount of staff time and financial support. Present sponsorship provides funds to cover expenses of
team, but Extension's budget situation could at any time "freeze" out-of-state travel for staff members.
If that happens, it could then prohibit our team from taking part in national. Present sponsorship
support permits limited assistance for volunteer adults to serve as advisors for the state team and
accompany them to national.
Changes are being discussed for the agenda and the score cards. Details will be announced as they are available.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Each year, National distributes a handbook about the National Invitational. As of the year 2000, this information is available at the Invitational website at: http://www.invitational.uiuc.edu
