The Kentucky 4-H Horse Program consists of various activities at the county, area, state and national levels throughout the year. Each area has a designated 4-H Horse Contact Agent who works closely with the Area 4-H Horse Advisory Council to conduct area-wide events such as the Area 4-H Horse Judging Contest, Area 4-H Horse Show and Area or Multi-Area Horsemanship Camps. Competitions at the state level include the State 4-H Horse Special Event in May, State 4-H Horse Contests in June and the State 4-H Horse Show in July. 4-Hers excelling in these state level events can advance into national competition at the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Roundup (August), All-American Quarter Horse Congress (October) and the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup (November). These and other educational opportunities, including leader training, are held each year in the Kentucky 4-H Horse Program. The most up to date information, dates, entry forms and resources can be found on the Kentucky 4-H Horse Program web site at www.uky.edu/ag/4hhorse. Please refer to this web site for youth horse program information.

RIDING SAFETY HELMET POLICY

The Kentucky 4-H Horse Program strongly encourages all riders to wear protective headgear passing or surpassing current applicable ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)/SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) standards with harness secured while riding or driving. County and Area 4-H Horse Programs are highly encouraged to require ASTM-SEI Equestrian Helmets for shows, horsemanship camps, trail rides, etc.

All 4-Hers riding or driving horses at the Area and State 4-H Horse Shows are required to wear an ASTM-SEI Equestrian Helmet at all times. This includes all Area and State 4-H Horse show project horse classes, open invitational classes and Drill Team. Harness must be secured and properly fitted. Any rider violating this rule at any time will immediately be prohibited from further riding until such headgear is properly in place.

It is the responsibility of the rider, or the parent or guardian of the youth exhibitor to see to it that the headgear worn complies with appropriate safety standards for protective headgear intended for equestrian use, and is properly fitted and in good condition; and the Kentucky 4-H Horse Program, Show Committees, Officials and Judges are not responsible for checking headgear worn for such compliance.

The Kentucky 4-H Horse Program makes no representation or warranty, express or implied, about any protective headgear, and cautions riders that death or serious injury may result despite wearing such headgear as all equestrian sports involve inherent dangerous risk and as no helmet can protect against all foreseeable injuries.

The show committee will bar riders from participation at Area and State 4-H Horse Shows when riding or driving without protective headgear, and may bar any entry or person from entering the ring if not suitably attired.

Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all peoples
regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.
