OVERVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL FOREIGN YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM (IFYE)

Several opportunities are available for teens, young adult alumni, families, volunteer leaders and extension personnel to participate in international exchange programs. Participation may include going to another country or hosting an international student in Kentucky.

Kentuckians may travel to another country through 2 major programs--"IFYE Representative" and "IFYE Ambassador." However, other options may become available as opportunities arise.

Another way to participate in an international experience while staying at home is to host an IFYE student from another country.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF AGENT for all international exchanges

1. Promote as identified in the county plan of work or as interest is expressed by local clientele.
2. Provide the following forms to interested individuals: application, scholarship and medical.
3. Set a county deadline for application forms and checks.
4. Run a background check on host families.
5. Submit completed forms and check, background check and four passport size photos to state contact by the state deadline.
6. Write impact statements regarding exchange experiences. Include attitudes changed, goals set, changes in behavior and action taken. Be sure to use the term "valuing diversity" in the impact statement.

Cultural Boxes Available

If you are interested in video tapes, maps, books, cultural items which represent various cultures to use with clubs, displays, and classrooms, please contact Bob Frye in the State 4-H Department. Six boxes are available at the present time. The boxes can be checked out for one month. If you have items you would like to add to any of the boxes, we will take donations. If you have interest in developing cultural boxes for other countries, please let Dr. Wendy Stivers know which countries you would like for us to develop.

Boxes are available for:
Austria
Ecuador
France
Greece
Israel
Japan

This program will offer a host family stay in one country as well as educational touring of several neighboring countries. The program length will be 2 to 3 weeks and the departure date will be late June. This will provide a group travel experience accompanied by adult leader(s) and will be available for 15-19 year olds. More information will be available after September 15, 2002.
