Kentucky News updated as of March 25, 2009

  • Hello Everyone,

Below is a map of the current distribution of Soybean Rust in the U.S. and Mexico. Check out the public SBR website, www.sbrusa.net, for more details.

There is still a chance that a hard freeze may occur and take out the positive sites in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana. However, with each passing day, the chances this will happen are reduced. If no more hard freezes are experienced in the deep South this spring, this will be the first time that SBR survived from one year to the next in AL, GA, and LA without some break in detection. This may or may not result in earlier movement of SBR this year. Beyond overwintering, weather conditions in the south in April-June will play a dominant role in determining the 2009 SBR outcome.

The 2009 Kentucky SBR Surveillance is now set. We have uploaded 2009 documents for your use. Just go to the public site, go to the top of the map “state” and click on KY. Then double click on the map and a screen will pop up. We have added a document that describes our 2009 SBR surveillance effort. You will also see “Tactics-KY” in the lower right hand corner of the screen. This document is a summary of our SBR fungicide recommendations for 2009. For more detailed information on SBR fungicide use, go to http://oardc.osu.edu/soyrust/. This link will take you to the 2008 edition of “Using Foliar Fungicides to Manage Soybean Rust”.

One final thing. I will begin updating the Kentucky Soybean Promotion Board’s SBR toll –free hotline (888-321-6771) beginning May 1. Have a rust-free day.

    Have a rust-free day!
