Kentucky News updated as of April 7, 2008

  • Hello Everyone,

This is my first soybean rust communication for 2008. Presently, the only active soybean rust in the U.S. is in Florida (see www.sbrusa.net<http://www.sbrusa.net>). There is a little on kudzu in Alabama at this time, but it will be destroyed this week. Other spots previously found to be infected in GA, LA, MO, and TX are no longer positive. Kudzu is now growing and there is plenty of moisture all across the South. I expect there will be new finds soon.

I participated in a soybean rust teleconference earlier today and Mexican officials were involved. They currently have some soybean rust in volunteer soybeans that are in corn. They are just now getting into their soybean planting season and have yet to enter their rainy season (eastern Mexico). They indicated a concern that soybean rust may be serious in 2008. They also said that their yam bean (Jicama) crop did have significant levels of soybean rust, but that crop is now harvested and should not contribute to our soybean rust potential.

Below is some information about a new and improved version of the Soybean Rust Manual that originally came out in 2005. You can go to the below website and download chapters or read it on line.

Stay alert and have a rust-free day!

Trainings

  • no soybean rust specific trainings are presently being offered in Kentucky
