Kentucky News updated as of April 9, 2008

  • Dear Soybean Rust Enthusiasts

Attached is a recent document being maintained by Dr. Kent Smith, who is a plant pathologist with USDA, ARS, AO, Office of Pest Management Policy. The document lists the current status of fungicides with section 18 or section 3 labels for soybean rust management.

It is my understanding that several fungicide companies who have products labeled for soybean, but that may also be applied to wheat, may be in short supply during 2008. This is because of the insanely high wheat prices, which has resulted in more acres being planted, and many more acres projected to be treated with a fungicide. I’m sure that the 15-20 million acres of corn that are likely to be sprayed with a fungicide in 2008 may also be the cause of shortages of certain fungicides. It might be in your best interest to check on the availability of fungicides in your area should soybean rust become a factor in 2008.

Overall, we are behind in SBR sightings so far this year compared with the previous couple of years at this same time. You will note that Mexico is reporting some soybean rust, but keep in mind this is the first year they are reporting finds on the SBR map (www.sbrusa.net). It is very likely that soybean rust was present in previous years during March-early April, but we were not aware of it. Also, it is my understanding that soybean rust is no longer found in Louisiana. Thus, my statement that we are behind in the number of finds compared to 2008. This said, do not assume that there will be less soybean rust than last year. Stay alert and connected.
