- Hello Everyone,
Below is some information on the first find of soybean rust in Georgia for 2008. I think the announcement puts things into a good perspective.
The soybean rust risk for the state of Kentucky continues to be very low. This, in large measure, is due to the very low level of rust in the deep South so far this season. Low rust levels, translate into insufficient numbers of spores available to jump-start an epidemic in more northern areas. The maps, below, show the soybean rust distribution today and one year ago. On the surface, it appears as though things are considerably behind compared to last year - and they probably are. However, there are a lot of late beans in the South this year, due to late planting as a result of wet conditions this spring, and there is a much larger concentration of doublecrop soybeans in the deep South this year (high wheat prices). These factors could shift things later in the season for them. Thus, some southern producers could still have significant issues with soybean rust. Our crop stage and percent of doublecrop soybean, however, is not substantially different than normal. Thus, I believe we will be minimally impacted even if rust really explodes in the deep South late in the season. It is still too early to call the game, but the odds are in our favor that soybean rust will not be a factor in KY during 2008.
