- Hello Everyone,
- There continues to be very little new soybean rust (SBR) development in the deep South. Experts are somewhat perplexed at the lack of new development, since the conditions in much of southern AL, GA, MS, LA and the pan handle of FL appear, to have been favorable for disease development. We obviously still have a great deal to learn about SBR. This season, thus far, has been very inactive in terms of tropical storm systems. This may partly explain the lack of new SBR development. Many more late-planted acres of soybean in many southern states may also be a contributor; late planted soybean would tend to be at less advanced growth stages and may be less susceptible to SBR development. The lack of SBR in commercial fields is probably also limiting the spread of SBR by keeping spore numbers down. Spore production in kudzu is occurring, but we have learned that the disease doesn’t really kick into high gear until it reaches commercial soybean fields. I am sure there are many others reasons, but the fact remains, SBR is spreading very little at this time. Consequently, the SBR risk for KY continues to be very low.
- Have a rust-free day.
