Kentucky News updated as of July 29, 2009

  • Hello Everyone,

  • Below is the current distribution of soybean rust (SBR) in the US, versus this same date last year. You will quickly see that there are more positive sites in the central Gulf area this year, but you should be aware that the disease is progressing very slowly. There is little cause for alarm until SBR begins a northward trend. The lack of tropical weather systems so far this summer has helped to keep SBR in check.

This is the time of year when we begin to hear false reports of SBR finds in various parts of the country. Most recently, there was a rumor being passed around that SBR had been detected in South Dakota. This IS NOT true. The only SBR at the moment is in the areas shaded red in the 2009 map. Consequently, the SBR risk for KY is very low. If you are in the process of deciding whether or not to apply a fungicide, fear of SBR should not be part of the decision.
