Kentucky News updated as of August 27, 2008

  • Hello Everyone,

The soybean rust risk for Kentucky continues to be very low into the immediate future.

As you can see from the maps, below, the number and extent of finds so far this year is way behind where it was this time last year. On this date in 2007, soybean rust was on the move in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Arkansas; and was present to one extent or another in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. But recall that in 2007, we barely had any soybean rust and I can say that no yield was lost in KY due to the disease that year.

Presently, the disease is still pretty much on a holding pattern. There have been two new finds in Georgia the last couple of days, so my guess is that we will soon begin to see an upturn in disease in that state and perhaps in South Carolina and other states as Tropical Storm Fay plays out. The bottom of this update shows the forecasted rain for 24, 48 and 72 hours out. It is very likely that the next few days’ rain events will impact the future soybean rust situation. However, I believe it will be too little and too late to damage our soybean crop. It is my opinion that any soybean field in Kentucky that is at stage R5 or later is now safe from damage due to soybean rust.
