Kentucky News updated as of August 24, 2009

  • Hello Everyone,

  • Below is the current distribution of soybean rust (SBR) in the US. Since my last update, numerous new finds have been picked up in commercial soybean fields in Mississippi (Delta area). There is also increased activity in Louisiana. However, NO new finds have been made in Arkansas, Alabama or Georgia despite lots of hard looking. In addition, there is no SBR activity in Mexico at this time.

I expect there will be many new finds over the next two weeks. However, it is my opinion that whatever transpires from this point on, will not have any impact on the Kentucky soybean crop (including doublecrop soybean). Both full season and doublecrop soybeans are just too far along, and it would take SBR at least a month, and probably more, to develop to damaging levels even if we were to find it today.

We will continue to look for SBR in KY, of course, but I believe we are out of the woods based upon all we know about the disease and what it takes to damage yields. I will, however, add that soybeans in some fields in the deep South are still at significant risk for damage. Selected fields in states like Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas are still in early growth stages, and many of these fields will not be harvested until November.
