Kentucky News updated as of August 31, 2009

  • Hello Everyone,

  • Below is the current distribution of soybean rust (SBR) compared to the same date a year ago. Clearly, things are much further ahead this year, and this is probably due to the early finds in Louisiana a few months back. The fact that the disease has been detected in north Alabama is significant, and means that we and TN will be the next states to report SBR. Yes, I except to find SBR in KY fairly soon, but I want to say again, I truly believe that our soybean crops are no longer at risk for damage. It is already the beginning of September and even if we found SBR today, it would not develop fast enough to be a threat.

Note: we have beefed up our scouting efforts in high risk fields and, to date, no SBR in KY. But I think the flood gate is about to open….just a hunch. Still, “relax and be happy”.
