Kentucky News updated as of September 03, 2008

  • Hello Everyone,

Soybean rust (SBR) finds are way behind where there were for this date in 2007. SBR is still currently restricted to selected states in the deep South, but things are now beginning to ramp-up. In my opinion, KY soybean are out of SBR danger for 2008. Even if soybean rust were found today, it would still take a month or so for the disease to develop to damaging levels. By that time, harvest will be underway and even doublecrop beans will be approaching maturity, especially in areas that have been dry.

I do believe that Hurricane Gustav, as well as forecasted storms that will hit the US later this week, will cause an upturn in soybean rust finds in the US, especially the deep South where weather conditions are highly favorable for soybean rust development. But for KY, this is all happening too little, too late, to be of any consequence. That, of course, is VERY good news.

Below are the September 2nd maps from 2005-2008. The current situation looks a bit like it did in 2006. Recall in that year that we had zero damage due to soybean rust, but we did eventually find the disease in nearly 20 counties. I think we will see a similar situation develop in October, much like we did during 2006.
