Kentucky News updated as of September 7 , 2007

  • Hello Everyone,

This has been a fairly inactive week for soybean rust. There have been a couple of new finds in the deep south, but that is about it. As you can see from the maps, below, there are many more positives for soybean rust in the middle of the US this year than this same time last year. I believe we will begin seeing low levels of soybean rust in more northern states within the next couple of weeks. Most, if not all, northern acreage will escape any yield loss related to SBR, but it will be noteworthy. When all is said and done, I believe we will again see the capability of SBR to spread long distances in a short period of time. In my opinion, the potential for long distance spread of SBR affirms value of the sentinel plots located in the north. I am expecting soybean rust to be found north of Kentucky before we find it. Time will tell if this is an accurate statement.

At this time, the risk of soybean rust for Kentucky is low to moderate, depending on where the rains have hit. I cannot think of a single situation where I would recommend anyone spray for soybean rust control in Kentucky.

Trainings
