Kentucky News updated as of September 8, 2009

  • Hello Everyone,

  • As you can see, below, soybean rust is really on the move now. Shorter days, cooler nights, more overall moisture, etc., are really helping with disease development. Most new finds are still in Arkansas and Mississippi, but there have been additional finds in Alabama and even one in extreme southwest Tennessee. I expect we will find soybean rust in September, but so far, no soybean rust in KY.

I want to reiterate that in my opinion even soybeans that have a month of filling left are not at risk to damage by soybean rust. As I have said in previous updates, even if we found soybean rust today, it would take it more than a month to build up to damaging levels. By then 99.9% of even the latest-planted fields will be good to go. So in many ways, my most recent updates are of mere academic interest. Nonetheless, I will continue to send them until the season is over.
