Kentucky News updated as of
September 21 , 2007
- Hello Everyone,
Soybean rust was found today (Sept 21) at low levels in a MG 5.3 soybean variety in a sentinel plot in far west Kentucky (Ballard County). Incidence was 13% and severity was 1% or less on leaves with pustules. Leaves were collected by ANR Agent, Tom Miller, from the mid-canopy on Sept 19. The sample was received on Sept 20 and incubated overnight prior to observation. The fungus was observed to be readily sporulating in infected leaves following incubation and observation with a dissecting microscope. The probability is quite high that initial infection occurred about two weeks ago when there was a lot of rain during Sept 7-10. I expect there will be many more finds in Kentucky over the next few weeks.
It is too late in the season for SBR to cause any yield damage in Kentucky. In addition to our find, soybean rust finds are now a common occurrence in Arkansas and that state is rapidly "turning red". We will continue to search for new finds in Kentucky. For your information, this most recent find is 15 days earlier than last year. The net effect is the same: no impact. As always, the fungus will disappear entirely from Kentucky with our first hard frost.
