Kentucky News updated as of October 22, 2007

  • Hello Everyone,

Below (large map) is the current distribution of soybean rust in the US. Compared to the last update I sent out on October 12 (small map). There have been numerous new finds in states to our west. There has also been a find in central Indiana. We continue to look for SBR in Kentucky, but have not encountered any new finds beyond those previously reported for Ballard, Caldwell and Fulton Counties. Very shortly, we will not be any soybean leaves to look at and will be forced to look exclusively in kudzu until the first frost hits us.

You will note that Texas has started to turn more counties hatched, which indicates areas where rust was found previously, but can no longer be found. Look for other states, including Kentucky, to turn counties hatched soon. Also, you will begin to see the green (scouted) counties turn back to white as scouting comes to a close for the 2007 season. I will probably do a single update for November and one for December. Then we’ll see where things go from there. They will be increased scouting efforts for soybean rust in Mexico this winter (in soybean and jicma), so there may be some interesting results to report.

I would like to personally thank all of the volunteers who make the Kentucky SBR Sentinel Network possible. You have all done a wonderful job in making sure we know where SBR is and more importantly, where it is NOT. This information has been used by thousands of soybean producers in Kentucky and neighboring states to make the appropriate decision NOT to apply a fungicide for soybean rust control. Thanks for all your efforts!
