Kentucky News updated as of October 23, 2008

  • Hello Everyone,

As you can see below, Soybean rust has now been found as far north as central Illinois. We also had another find in Kentucky today. As fate would have it, the finds in Illinois and Kentucky are both in a McLean County….that’s odd. We found rust on 1 out of 135 leaves and at very low severity. The person who looks for soybean rust on leaf samples submitted in KY (Terry Yielding) does a great job, and if soybean rust is there she will find it! This is third year running that she was able to find that odd pustule here and there after a season full of looking and not finding rust. In fact, the entire Sentinel Network across this great county has a history of being able to detect soybean rust at extremely low levels. The system obviously works, and works very well.

Officials in the deep South continue to find soybean rust at a fast clip. In fact, Mississippi is almost entirely red now and Alabama is not far behind. As you can see from the maps, the pattern of finds this year is very different from previous years. This year’s finds are very condensed compared to previous years.
