Recent Graduate Student Accomplishments

  • Cathy Rehymeyer (Mark Farman) was awarded one of two "best oral presentation" awards, including a $100.00 prize, at the annual meeting of the Mycological Society of America in Hilo, Hawaii, in August. There were 27 students competing for the awards.  The title of her presentation was "Structure and dynamics of Magnaporthe oryzae telomeres."
      
  • Congratulations to Chunquan Zhang (Dr. Ghabrial) who successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation, titled "Genetic Diversity of Bean Pod Mottle Virus (BPMV) and Development of BPMV as a Vector for Gene Expression in Soybean" in July.  Zhang has accepted a job as a research scientist with Drs. Witham and Hill at Iowa State University, working on soyubean-virus interactions with an emphasis on resistance genes and soybean genomics.
  • Nicky Mundell (advisors C. Schardl and J. Hartman) successfully defended her M.S. thesis, titled "Phylogenetic Analysis of Kentucky Strains of Xylella fastidiosa", in April, 2005. Nicky will be starting work soon at the University of Kentucky Medical School as a research technician.
  • Chi-Ping Cheng (advisor P. Nagy) successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation, titled "Viral RNA Elements and Host Genes Affecting RNA Recombination in Tombusviruses" in April, 2005. Chi-Ping has returned to her home institution in Taiwan to take up a postdoctoral position there.
  • Claire Venard (advisor L. Vaillancourt) has been awarded a highly competitive University of Kentucky Dissertation Year Fellowship for the 2005-2006 academic year.
  • Claire Venard and Cathy Rehmeyer (advisor M. Farman) have both won travel awards, Claire from the American Phytopathological Society to attend the APS meeting in Austin, Texas, and Cathy from the Mycological Society of America to go to the MSA meeting in Hawaii.
  • Jennifer Flowers (advisors L. Vaillancourt and J. Hartman) has been invited to present her research at the International  Arboriculture Society meeting in Nashville in August.  Only three graduate students in the entire world were invited to participate!
  • Congratulations to Nicky and Rich Mundell on the birth of their daughter, Meghan, on May 11, 2005.
