University of Kentucky College of Agriculture

Our Video Library offers five different electronic field trips and free on-line curriculum materials to support them. These field trips offer students the opportunity to experience agriculture from their own classrooms.  Choose the field trip you would like to learn more about or view the written materials for:

Beef Farm
An Electronic Field Trip to a Beef Cattle Farm is an exciting way to learn about beef cattle and farming without leaving your classroom.  Students who live in towns, cities, and suburbs - whose experience with beef cattle might consist of seeing the Pamplona running of the bulls or driving past sprawling beef cattle farms - might be very curious to learn what life is like on one of those farms.  During the field trip to Salt River Farms in Boyle County, students will learn what makes the Bluegrass region so good for raising beef cattle and other livestock, what a typical day on a beef cattle farm is like, how a veterinarian knows that a cow is with calf, and a little about the economics of farming.  There are many activities from which to choose.   You are invited to come along on an electronic field trip!

Horse Farm
An Electronic Field Trip to a Horse Farm is an exciting way to learn about horses and farming without leaving your classroom.  Students who live in towns, cities, and suburbs--whose experience with horses might consist of watching the Kentucky Derby on television or driving past sprawling white-fenced horse farms--might be very curious to learn what life is like on one of those farms.  During the field trip to Margaux Farm in Woodford County, students will learn what makes the Bluegrass region so good for raising horses and other livestock, what a farrier does, what a typical day on a horse farm is like, how a veterinarian knows that a mare is with foal, and a little about the breeding of thoroughbreds.  There are many activities from which to choose.   You are invited to come along on an electronic field trip!

Pig Farm
An Electronic Field Trip to a Pig Farm is an exciting way to learn about the swine industry without leaving your classroom.  Students who live in towns, cities, and suburbs--whose experience with pigs might consist of watching the movie "Babe"--might be very curious to learn what life is like on one of those farms.  During the field trip to BLT Farm in Hardin County, students will learn what makes Kentucky so good for raising pigs and other livestock, what a typical day on a pig farm is like, how a veterinarian clips needle teeth, and a little about the life cycle of swine.  There are many activities from which to choose.   You are invited to come along on an electronic field trip!

Vet Clinic
An Electronic Field Trip to a Vet Clinic is an exciting way to learn about the daily workings of a vet clinic without leaving your classroom.  Students might be very curious to learn what life is like for a veterinarian on a daily basis.  During the field trip to  in Jessamine County, students will learn how difficult it is to be a veterinarian, what a typical day in a vet clinic is like, how a veterinarian cleans animal's teeth, and will even get to see a foal being born.  There are many activities from which to choose.   You are invited to come along on an electronic field trip!

Orchard
Nothing says fall like a sweet, crunchy apple right off the tree. Well you may not be able to visit an orchard to pick your own this year, but come with us on our Electronic Field Trip to an Orchard and experience the next best thing! Haney's Appledale Farms, a family owned-and-operated apple and peach orchard in central Kentucky, welcomes you for a year-long visit to their operation. Don and Mark Haney show-and-tell us how they select, plant, cultivate, manage, harvest, and market their fruit.

NAILE
An Electronic Field Trip to the North Amercian International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) is a great way to introduce students to animal agriculture. The NAILE brings in the best beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, horses, llamas, Alpacas, and dairy and Boer goats. During this field trip, students learn the history of the North American, reasons for exhibition, and where their food comes from. Students also have a chance to get closer to livestock producers. Come along and enjoy the sights of the North American International Livestock Exposition.

In Kentucky, schools can view the programs on the KET StarChannels.  We are digitizing the tapes so soon they will be available online.
