Animal Sciences
HALL OF FAME

Evans Edward Wright '66, who has devoted much of his career to improving Kentucky's dairy industry, has been inducted into the College's Animal Sciences Hall of Fame.

Wright currently serves as president of the Kentucky Milk Producers Association. In that role, he led talks in the late 1990s with the state's Agricultural Development Board about what was needed to develop Kentucky's dairy industry.

Wright's insight helped to shape current dairy programs available through the Agricultural Development Fund, including programs in forage and cattle genetics improvement, dairy diversification, and storage of hay, straw, and commodities.

Wright grew up on a general livestock and dairy farm in Monroe County. He now has his own dairy and tobacco farm there.

At UK, Wright majored in dairy production management, earning his B.S. degree in agriculture.

He has worked as a dairy extension specialist at UK and for Kentucky Dairy Records, the American Jersey Cattle Club, and the National Brown Swiss Breeders Association.

Since 1996 Wright has been a director of Mid-South Dairy Records, which provides computer-based record keeping for dairy farms.

Wright also has been a director, officer, and president of the Monroe County Farm Bureau. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 2005 Animal Sciences Reunion.

HALL OF FAME

Sue H. Whitaker '64, Cozatta Tucker Helm '71, '73, and Tanya G. Pullin '80 are the newest members of the Human Environmental Sciences Hall of Fame.

Sue Whitaker is associate professor for the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. She earned her undergraduate degree at UK in vocational home economics education.

She continued her education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she completed a master's degree in home economics education and a doctorate degree in continuing and vocational education. Whitaker joined the Ball State faculty in 1976.

Cozatta Tucker Helm earned her undergraduate and master's in HES. Helm also earned a master's degree in management from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

She then began a career in food science, using her skills at several Midwestern foods-related companies, including J.W. Allen, the Kitchens of Sara Lee, Keebler, and NutraSweet. Helm is currently vice-president of research and development at Wixon in suburban Milwaukee.

Tanya G. Pullin, a Greenup County native, is now serving her third term in the Kentucky House of Representatives. After earning her undergraduate degree in human development and family relations, she completed a master's degree at Duke University and then returned to UK to earn her law degree.

Pullin began her law career in New York City and then worked for a Hong Kong law firm.

Pullin has sponsored a number of bills in her career in the Kentucky House of Representatives, including legislation to build and repair the state's natural gas pipelines, reduce broadband regulations, and forgive interest on student loans for college graduates who stay in Kentucky to teach.

Whitaker, Helm, and Pullin were named to the HES Hall of Fame in ceremonies held last fall at Roundup, bringing the number of distinguished alumni in the group to 23.

National Board

Marianne Smith Edge '77 has been appointed to a national extension advisory board.

Smith Edge now serves on the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory Board, which advises the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and land-grant colleges.

Edge, who earned her undergraduate degree in dietetics, owns a nutrition communications and marketing consulting company in Owensboro . She has served as alumni representative on the UK Board of Trustees since 2000 (term ending June 30 of this year) and was named to the HES Hall of Fame in 2001.
